Library Board of Trustees Minutes of Meeting January 23, 2017 Sterling Heights Public Library 40255 Dodge Park, Sterling Heights, MI 48313 586-446-2665 I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Jo Berthet, Chair, at 5:31 p.m. II. Roll Call Members Present: Josephine Berthet, Dave Brown, Chris Frezza, June Hughes, Stacy Ziarko Members Absent: none III. Approval of Agenda Brown made a motion to approve the Agenda, seconded by Hughes. Motion carried. IV. Approval of Minutes Frezza made a motion to approve the minutes of the meeting on November 21, 2016, seconded by Ziarko. Motion carried. V. Communication from Citizens Turgeon provided the Board with information about the Digitial Newspapers contest that the Library and Historical Commission are in. Michigan themed postcards can be mailed in by Saturday. Tweeting #DigUtica this week will also get us votes. VI. Monthly Reports, Statistics, and Correspondence A. Building-Wide Stats – FY2016 / FY2017 Board reviewed statistics. Overall statistics are down comparing Dec 2015 to Dec 2016. However, wireless usage and program attendance are up. Now that all of the construction is finished, we hope to bring back our customers. Sundays are getting busier. B. Monthly Issues – November and December 2016 Board reviewed the monthly issues reports. Board appreciated the Library assisting with the LawnGuru sign-up fair. Board is hopeful that the CDBG Committee will fund refurbishment of the Upton House. There have been many staff changes. Youstina Guirguis was hired as a new PT Librarian. Brenda Ford is retiring. Anne Schultz is taking her position. Loa Stanislawski is taking Anne’s position. Loa’s position is currently posted. C. Compliment/Complaint Forms Board reviewed compliments. Received compliments for the Santa Open House and the print system. Special recognition was received for service provided Nina Fancher. Board reviewed complaints. Patron complained about the large number of handicapped parking spaces. This can not be changed. Complaint was received about renewing a child’s library card. The parent must be present with the child to renew the card. VII. Suburban Library Cooperative A. SLC Annual Meeting The Cooperative is reviewing its current contract with SirsiDynix for the automation system. VIII. Friends of the Library A. Bookstore Report The bookstore sales for this year ended up below last year, but considering the construction they did very well. They ended the year at $45,488.04. B. Quarterly Treasurer’s Report The Friends provided their quarterly report to the Board. IX. Unfinished Business none X. New Business A. Election of Officers Motion to appoint Chris Frezza as the Chair was made by Hughes, supported by Berthet. Motion carried. The Board thanked Jo Berthet for serving as the Chair for the past year and appreciates her leadership. Berthet informed the Board that she enjoyed serving as Chair, but has other matters that may need her attention this year and did not want that to interfere with her duties on the Board. B. Proposed Library Budget 2017-18 A 2% increase was proposed. The library is asking for more money to supplies to replace a broken book drop cart and the book drop that is attached to the building. The money will also be used to continue replacement of the tables in the programming center and replacement of chairs. Additional money is also sought to increase the book budget and the databases budget. C. 2016 Library Volunteer of the Year Motion to select Krys Kobersy as the 2016 Library Volunteer of the Year was made by Ziarko, supported by Brown. Motion carried. D. 2016 Library Staff Member Recognition Motion to select Barb Petrowski for the 2016 Library Staff Member Recognition was made by Brown, supported by Frezza. Motion carried. XI. Adjourn Motion was made by Ziarko to adjourn, supported by Hughes. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:25 p.m.
