Library Board of Trustees Minutes of Meeting March 20, 2017 Sterling Heights Public Library 40255 Dodge Park, Sterling Heights, MI 48313 586-446-2665 I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Chris Frezza, Chair, at 5:30 p.m. II. Roll Call Members Present: Josephine Berthet, Chris Frezza, June Hughes, Stacy Ziarko Members Absent: Dave Brown III. Approval of Agenda Berthet made a motion to approve the Agenda, seconded by Hughes. Motion carried. IV. Approval of Minutes Ziarko made a motion to approve the minutes of the meeting on January 23, 2017, seconded by Berthet. Motion carried. V. Communication from Citizens none VI. Monthly Reports, Statistics, and Correspondence A. Building-Wide Stats – FY2016 / FY2017 and Annual Comparison Board reviewed statistics. New patron counters were installed in the lobby which has shown a large decrease in library visits. The counters are more accurate as they detect each person instead of just an object crossing the path of a light. Circulation is slightly lower than last year, but emedia circulation is up. Program attendance was high due to new children’s programs occurring this winter. Looking at the annual comparison, collection size continues to increase due to emedia, online usage is over 1 million again, and program attendance is higher than it has been since 2010. Library cards, circulation and reference interactions continue to decline. Library visits are back to 1994 – 2004 levels. B. Monthly Issues – January and February 2017 Board reviewed the monthly issues reports. Board was disappointed that the #DigUtica campaign did not win. Board asked about new Minecraft software. It is still very popular with young patrons. Board was complimentary about the new winter reading program for kids. Board asked about Tammy’s Top Shelf videos. They will be debuting soon. C. Compliment/Complaint Forms Board reviewed compliments. Received compliments for Baby Lapsit program, Exotic Zoo program, Black History Month programs, DIA program, having scrap paper at the PCs, Teen Chocolate program, Land Grab program, and a general thank you for our marvelous staff. Special recognition was received for service provided by Jessica Woodward, Debbie Vercellone, Gary Johnson, Betty Derra, Diane Spelich, Rebecca LaFave, and Brent Efing. Board reviewed complaints. Patron suggested purchasing Hoopla. The library can not afford it at this time. Patron requested the Friends’ Used but Sterling bookstore remove items that are under the tables and put them all up on shelving. This can not be accomplished due to limited space. Patron requested that Coin World magazine be purchased again. It was mistakenly missed when our subscriptions were renewed. It has been added. Patrons complained about the bathroom stall latch not working. The bathrooms will be remodeled later this year and new stalls will be included. Patron complained about excessive noise on the first floor. Staff will continue to monitor. Board wanted to compliment Danielle Kopacki for the new consolidated format for the Board to review feedback. VII. Suburban Library Cooperative Cooperative is currently negotiating with SirsiDynix to renew the automation system contract. VIII. Friends of the Library A. Bookstore Report The bookstore sales for this year are starting out well. The Little Free Libraries are still busy. IX. Unfinished Business none X. New Business A. Code of Conduct Policy Revision Motion to approve the changes to the Code of Conduct policy was made by Ziarko, supported by Berthet. Motion carried. B. Internet Use Policy Revision Motion to approve the changes to the Internet Use Policy was made by Hughes, supported by Berthet. Motion carried. C. 50th Anniversary Participation Meeting is tomorrow. Berthet is attending. XI. Adjourn Motion was made by Berthet to adjourn, supported by Ziarko. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:07 p.m.
