Library Board of Trustees Minutes of Meeting May 15, 2017 Sterling Heights Public Library 40255 Dodge Park, Sterling Heights, MI 48313 586-446-2665 I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Chris Frezza, Chair, at 5:54 p.m. II. Roll Call Members Present: Josephine Berthet, Dave Brown, Chris Frezza, June Hughes, Stacy Ziarko Members Absent: none III. Approval of Agenda Item X.C. Library of Michigan LSTA Grant was asked to be added to the agenda. Motion to approve the Agenda as amended was made by Brown, seconded by Berthet. Motion carried. IV. Approval of Minutes Hughes made a motion to approve the minutes of the meeting of March 20, 2017, seconded by Ziarko. Motion carried. V. Communication from Citizens none VI. Monthly Reports, Statistics, and Correspondence A. Building-Wide Stats – FY2016 / FY2017 Board reviewed statistics. Library visits are lower due to new patron counters. Circulation and Reference transactions are also down. Wireless usage continues to be high. Collection size continues to increase due to digital material acquisitions. B. Monthly Issues – March and April 2017 Board reviewed the monthly issues reports. The bookmark contest with the Summer Reading theme is a great addition for the summer. The Teen March Madness competition was a great idea to get teens engaged. It was nice to see so many of the ESL students from UCS getting new library cards. Money Smart Week programs went well. The volunteer luncheon was very successful. C. Compliment/Complaint Forms Board reviewed compliments. Received compliments for Boogie Woogie Kid program, Idlewild program, and three compliments for our friendly and helpful staff. Board reviewed complaints. Patron suggested that the handicapped door button be moved. This is not possible, but Facilities did extend the time that the door stays open to as long as it could be. Staff will also be careful to move the book drop bins to another area so that the button is not blocked. Patron complained about cell phone use in the library. We do allow cell phone use, but ask that long conversations be taken to the lobby. Patron complained about dirty computer keyboards. Staff will start cleaning them three times a week. Wipes are always available at the reference desks for patrons to use if needed. VII. Suburban Library Cooperative Cooperative has received a proposal from SirsiDynix for a five year contract with flat pricing. The SLC Board is reviewing it at its May meeting. VIII. Friends of the Library A. Bookstore Report The bookstore sales for this year are starting out well. The Little Free Libraries are still busy. B. Quarterly Treasurer’s Report The report was reviewed by the Board. IX. Unfinished Business none X. New Business A. 2017-2018 Library Board Meeting Schedule Motion to approve the 2017-2018 Library Board Meeting Schedule was made by Brown, supported by Berthet. Motion carried. B. Sterlingfest Water Sale Board members volunteered to work at the Friends of the Library’s water sale during Sterlingfest. C. Library of Michigan LSTA Grant Motion was made by Ziarko to approve the LSTA Board Resolution Statement of Assurances entered into by the Sterling Heights Public Library on behalf of the Library of Michigan for a $2,000 grant for a youth drone program. If awarded the grant, the Sterling Heights Public Library agrees to comply with the statutes, rules, regulations, and executive orders provided to be eligible for receipt of federal assistance pursuant to the Library Services and Technology Act, supported by Brown. Motion carried. XI. Adjourn Motion was made by Ziarko to adjourn, supported by Hughes. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
