Library Board of Trustees Minutes of Meeting January 22, 2018 Sterling Heights Public Library 40255 Dodge Park, Sterling Heights, MI 48313 586-446-2665 I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Chris Frezza, Chair, at 5:35 p.m. II. Roll Call Members Present: Josephine Berthet, Dave Brown, Chris Frezza, June Hughes Members Absent: Stacy Ziarko III. Approval of Agenda Motion to approve the Agenda was made by Brown, seconded by Hughes. Motion carried. IV. Approval of Minutes Motion to approve the minutes of the meeting of November 20, 2017 was made by Hughes, seconded by Brown. Motion carried. V. Communication from Citizens none VI. Monthly Reports, Statistics, and Correspondence A. Building-Wide Stats – FY2017 / FY2018 Board reviewed statistics. Library visits were very low for December, but the cold weather could have impacted that number. Program attendance continues to be very strong. B. Monthly Issues – November and December 2017 Board reviewed the monthly issues reports. The new Fall reading program did well and we have a Winter reading program running right now. A thank you from Representative Farrington was received regarding these reading programs regarding the importance of libraries and literacy. This was shared with the City Manager. The Heartfulness Meditation group is still meeting in the conference room weekly. The Santa Open House was successful again this year, even though Santa had a replacement due to a health issue. The big teen program was a murder mystery and was big hit with the teens that organized it and those that participated. C. Compliment/Complaint Forms Board reviewed compliments. Received compliments for. Staff recognition was received for Debbie Vercellone, Jadwiga Meyer, and all of the Librarians that are so nice and helpful. Board reviewed suggestions/complaints. The location of the bookdrop is not ideal, but it is the best location for patrons to be able to access from the driver’s side window and also for staff to empty it. The length of checkout for TV shows on DVD is 7 days when new and then 14 days after six months. Most patrons are able to watch a TV season in that amount of time. The library also has to keep the titles moving from one patron to the next due to holds. The adult coloring program was held in January as a special event, but it will not be brought back due to low attendance. There is a permanent coloring station in the YA area. Due to costs, the puzzle competition is only held three times a year. Director explained to patron that was unhappy with the available hours and Internet access at Sterling Heights compared to Clinton-Macomb that the funding for our library is less than half of what is spent at Clinton-Macomb. VII. Suburban Library Cooperative Brown indicated that the SLC Annual meeting had a great speaker from SEMCOG. Frezza indicated that he would send the url for the video of the program. VIII. Friends of the Library A. Bookstore Report The bookstore sales ended about $2,000 less than the previous year. B. Quarterly Treasurer’s Report Board was provided a copy of the Quarterly Treasurer’s Report. The Friends have a new Treasurer. She is a former bookkeeper, so we’re really excited to have her on the Board. C. Friends Fundraiser The Friends are going to do a fundraiser at Marc Filipo Winery in Clinton Township on Thursday, March 15th from 7-9pm. We hope you can all attend. It is limited to 30 people. Tickets will be $30, with $15 going to the Friends. IX. Unfinished Business none X. New Business A. Election of Officers Board agreed that the election of officers occurs every other year. Frezza will remain as Chairman. B. Proposed Library Budget 2018-19 The library’s budget was provided with a 2% increase. The Director also presented service improvements for the promotion of staff, adding additional wifi hotspots, and adding the Hoopla digital service. The budget meeting with the city manager will take place in February. C. 2017 Library Volunteer of the Year Motion was made by Brown to select John Quainton as the Library’s 2017 Volunteer of the Year, supported by Berthet. Motion carried. D. 2017 Library Staff Member Recognition Motion was made by Berthet to select Karen Stine as the Library’s 2017 Employee of the Year, supported by Brown. Motion carried. XI. Adjourn Motion was made by Berthet to adjourn, supported by Hughes. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
