THE MINUTES OF THE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2019 STERLING HEIGHTS YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MEETING Location: 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313 The Sterling Heights Youth Advisory Board Meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Rohit Ray Emily Breton Genevieve Myers Maxymilian Stefanski Ashley Popko Connor Hayes Miranda Davis Faith Simon Ian Payne Sophia Garnczarski MEMBERS ABSENT: Ian Payne Emma Bowen Korey Zelda Amanda Young OFFICIALS PRESENT: Community Relations Director Melanie Davis Digital Content Coordinator Marissa Russo 1. Call to Order 2. Roll Call 3. Agenda A. Approval of 10/8/19 Meeting Minutes ● Miranda moved to apply changes to 3B of change Maxymilian’s name to his full name, first motioned by Rohit Ray and seconded by Maxymilian Stefanski ● Miranda moved to apply for a change to the date of the minutes to October 8th. This was motioned by Rohit and seconded by Emily Breton. 4. Old Business: A. Review Focus Topics Discussed at Last Meeting ● It was decided that the topics from the previous meeting will be discussed with the new business to help decide which topics we want to focus on and create subgroups out of. 5. New Business: A. Review Focus Topics Discussed at Last Meeting ● Mental Health: There were many ideas suggested such as: ○ Partnering with local psych students at colleges ○ Activities at parks around exams and outside activities ○ Playing with puppies around exam season and partnering with the humane society ○ Food trucks in the park or a movie at the amphitheater ○ Teen events in the summer and winter ● Local Government: ○ More teen-targeted events with police and fire ○ Fun activities and contests involving local government ○ Career day events and making schools aware and incentivizing ○ Assemblies at high schools for police/fire ○ Incentives at career events for Sterlingfest and other popular events ○ Job shadow opportunities and open houses, more education on careers ● Communication and Advertisement: ○ More awareness about SH app ○ Proposed Reddit and Snapchat ○ Online Ambassadors ● Sustainability and Economic Changes: ○ Fast fashion and effect on the environment ○ More bike trails and sidewalks, accessibility for pedestrians ○ Greenhouses or community gatherings like coffee shops ○ More local shops and create a “downtown feel” area ○ Better teen-friendly places besides the mall B. Decide on Main Focus Topics ● The four main subgroups created were decided to be Sustainability, Mental Health, Local Government, and Inclusivity Development 6. Adjournment. Meeting adjourned at 7:27 p.m.
