MINUTES OF THE STREATOR PARKS & OPEN SPACES BOARD COUNCIL CHAMBERS - CITY HALL OFFICE 204 S BLOOMINGTON STREET STREATOR, IL 61364 WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2024 6:00 P.M. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Wheeler called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.m. ROLL CALL Members present: Caulkins, Henderson, Martin, Snell, and Chairman Gary Wheeler. Members absent: Nora Sedlock and Rob Tyne. Staff present: Jeff Long, Public Works Director, Patricia Henderson, City Clerk, and Mayor Bedei. MINUTES – Approve minutes of the meeting on March 13, 2024. Chairman Wheeler requested a motion and second to approve the minutes from the March 13, 2024 meeting. MOTION: Henderson made a motion to approve the minutes; seconded by Caulkins. ROLL: Ayes: Caulkins, Henderson, Martin, Snell, and Chairman Wheeler. Absent: Sedlock and Tyne. PUBLIC COMMENTS Ellen Vogel, OSF Live Well – from June 9-15 will be seeking volunteers to help clean up Central Park. There will also be a dumpster available there for convenience. Ellen also reported that Illinois American Water and Streator High School awarded funding for bottle filler & water fountain at James Street which will be red and mounted on the wall. At 6:12 p.m. Nora Sedlock, Board member, arrived at the meeting. DISCUSSION ITEMS 1. MARILLA PARK PRESENTATION – MELISSA CRANK Mayor Bedei introduced Melissa Crank to the board. Melissa presented a plan to the board to build a playground in Marilla Park named after her son, Logan’s Oasis. This will be done strictly by fundraising. 2. STRATEGIC PLAN DISCUSSION – CHAIRMAN WHEELER Chairman Wheeler reviewed a handout with the Board regarding the most important items on the Strategic Planning list. The discussion mainly focused on Marilla Park and the Greenway Trail. They will prioritize items needed for both parks. The board also discussed ways to use signage leading to our parks. The new picnic shelter at the Canoe Launch is underway. Public Works is in the process of roofing the shelter. A new picnic table will also go with the shelter. COMMENTS FROM BOARD MEMBERS Caulkins – Twister Hill restrooms need to be opened or porta potties need to be brought in. Patricia Henderson, City Clerk, announced that Cinda Bond donated a new handicapped picnic table to be used at the Splash Pad. Mayor Bedei – Tour of Honor will be coming to Streator this summer. There is a plan underway to restore the memorial at the Canteen. Jeff Long – Centennial Elementary School will be replacing their playground equipment this year and will donate their used equipment to the City. He also mentioned the possibility of rubber mulch for the City Park. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Wheeler requested a motion and second to adjourn the meeting. MOTION: Caulkins made a motion to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Martin. ROLL: Ayes: Caulkins, Henderson, Martin, Sedlock, Snell, and Chairman Wheeler.
