Council Member Milteer offered the Invocation, and Boy Scout Troop 73 led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. ORDINANCES There were no items under this portion of the agenda. 2 City Council Regular Meeting March 7, 2018 RESOLUTIONS Resolution – A resolution of the Council of the City of Suffolk, Virginia for jurisdictional approval of the issuance by the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority of its Multi-family Housing Revenue Bonds for the benefit of the Heritage Acres Preservation Project, located in the City of Suffolk, Virginia City Manager Roberts offered a synopsis of the background information as printed in the official agenda. He introduced Vanessa Yearick, Williams Mullen, the bond counsel for the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, who provided additional information on the proposed resolution and the following resolution - a resolution of the Council of the City of Suffolk, Virginia for approval of the issuance by the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority of its Multi-family Housing Revenue Bonds for the benefit of the Hope Village Preservation Project, located in the County of Henrico, Virginia. Joe Simmons, 6356 OKelly Drive, representing the Holland Ruritan Club, invited all members of City Council to attend the Holland Ruritan Founders Day event. 4 City Council Regular Meeting March 7, 2018 Wayne White, 4216 Coltrane Avenue, President, Pughsville Civic League, opined about the need for various infrastructural improvements in Pughsville. NEW BUSINESS There were no items under this portion of the agenda. ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMENTS Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation, Media and Community Relations Assistant Director Tim Kelley reported on the following: ribbon cutting for Decent People Taproom; the Suffolk Police Department’s receipt of the 2017 John T. Hanna Drive Safe Hampton Roads Award; free federal and state tax return preparation at the Suffolk Workforce Development Center; the 34th Annual Juried Photography Exhibit at the Suffolk Art Gallery; Daylight Savings Time; Suffolk Restaurant Week; the Suffolk Public Library’s Women’s Fest 2018; Suffolk Humane Society’s adopt-a-thon and the Suffolk Police Department’s Awards Ceremony and Banquet. Council Member Fawcett opined about the Suffolk Police Department’s receipt of the 2017 John T. Hanna Drive Safe Hampton Roads Award. Council Member Fawcett opined about Daylights Saving Time and changing batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Council Member Fawcett announced he attended the Suffolk Public Library’s Battle of the Books. Council Member Fawcett reported he attended an event with Congressman Bobby Scott and Senator Tim Kaine. Council Member Milteer thanked the Public Works Department for ditch cleaning on Airport Road. Council Member Johnson thanked the Public Works Department for improvements on Arthur Drive. Council Member Johnson announced he attended the Suffolk Public Library and Keep Suffolk Beautiful Love Our City Meet Up and Clean Up. Council Member Johnson opined about the Holland Ruritan Founders Day event. Council Member Ward opined about Mr. White’s comments regarding Pughsville. Council Member Ward opined the matter raised by Mr. Johnson regarding the United Brothers Lodge. Council Member Ward reported he attended an event with Congressman Bobby Scott and Senator Tim Kaine. Council Member Duman acknowledged the service of the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department. Council Member Duman opined about the upcoming Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2018-2019. Vice Mayor Bennett thanked Boy Scout Troop 73 for attending tonight’s meeting. 5 City Council Regular Meeting March 7, 2018 Vice Mayor Bennett opined about the Suffolk Police Department’s receipt of the 2017 John T. Hanna Drive Safe Hampton Roads Award. Vice Mayor Bennett announced an upcoming community cleanup on East Washington Street. Vice Mayor Bennett opined about a visit from Congressman A. Donald McEachin. Vice Mayor Bennett opined about the matter raised by Mr. Johnson regarding the United Brothers Lodge. City Manager Roberts said that the Planning and Community Development Department would contact Mr. Johnson to receive a written description of their request and determine if a temporary use would be feasible. Vice Mayor Bennett opined about the new Family Dollar on East Washington Street. Mayor Johnson thanked Boy Scout Troop 73 for attending tonight’s meeting. Mayor Johnson reported she attended the Suffolk Public Library’s Battle of the Books. Mayor Johnson encouraged residents to attend the Holland Ruritans Founders Day event and a performance by Little Country at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts.
