Special Presentation - Upcoming Downtown Events Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation, Recreation Supervisor Emily Upton and Economic Development Director Kevin Hughes supplied a report on the background information as printed in the official agenda. NEW BUSINESS City Clerk Dawley presented the following board and commission nominations for City Council’s consideration: Virginia Municipal League Annual Conference Annual Business Meeting – Vice Mayor Bennett (voting member) and Council Member Fawcett (alternate voting member) and the Virginia Municipal League Annual Conference Urban Section Meeting – Council Member Ward (voting member) and Council Member Goldberg (alternate voting member). Council Member Fawcett, on a motion seconded by Vice Mayor Bennett, moved to nominate and appoint the above referenced individuals to the aforementioned bodies, by the following vote: AYES: Mayor L. Barakey; ribbon cuttings for Embroidery and Print House, Allongé, TRICARE Prime Clinic and the Virginia Department of Transportation Hampton Roads District Headquarters; National Night Out Awards and Appreciation Ceremony; new community mural at the Suffolk Police Department; Mothers Against Drunk Driving 15th Annual Regional Law Enforcement Awards Dinner; Taste of Suffolk and Suffolk Humane Society adopt-a-thon. Council Member Johnson opined about back to school safety. 4 City Council Regular Meeting September 5, 2018 Council Member Ward reported he attended the ribbon cuttings for TRICARE Prime Clinic and the Virginia Department of Transportation Hampton Roads District Headquarters. Council Member Ward opined about residents who removed high grass and debris in Northern Suffolk. Council Member Duman announced he attended the following; the Nansemond Indian Pow Wow; the Suffolk Public Schools New Teachers Breakfast; the National Night Out Awards and Appreciation Ceremony and the Lake Prince Woods and Suffolk Humane Society 5K/Fun Run. Council Member Milteer reported he attended the Suffolk Public Schools New Teachers Breakfast. Council Member Fawcett announced he attended the following: ribbon cuttings for Embroidery and Print House and TRICARE Prime Clinic; Suffolk Public Schools New Teachers Breakfast; John Yeates Middle School and Florence Bowers Elementary School back to school events. Council Member Fawcett commended the Suffolk Police Department. Council Member Fawcett reported he attended the grand reopening of Food Lion and the United States Second Fleet Establishment Ceremony. Council Member Goldberg opined about Ed Beardsley’s Suffolk’s Prime Arts, Retail and Culinary Initiative. Council Member Goldberg commended City Administration for addressing various constituent concerns. Council Member Goldberg extended his condolences to the family of the late Waylan Pond, III. Council Member Goldberg opined about the start of football season in Suffolk Public Schools. Vice Mayor Bennett opined about the Taste of Suffolk. Vice Mayor Bennett reported he attended the Suffolk Public Schools New Teachers Breakfast and the Nansemond Indian Pow Wow. Vice Mayor Bennett announced the upcoming Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Virginia - Suffolk Unit Oyster Roast. Mayor Johnson opined about back to school season. Mayor Johnson opined about the upcoming dedications of the new Florence Bowser Elementary School and Colonel Fred Cherry Middle School. Mayor Johnson advised she attended the ribbon cutting for Embroidery and Print House. Mayor Johnson encouraged residents to attend the Taste of Suffolk and the 2018 Western Tidewater Walk to End Alzheimer's.
