Tony Myers, 102 Greenfield Crescent, representing self, requested an ordinance designating Suffolk as a 2nd Amendment sanctuary city. NEW BUSINESS City Clerk Dawley presented the following board and commission nominations for City Council’s consideration: Fine Arts Commission – Gail Hinton-Copeland. Council Member Fawcett, on a motion seconded by Council Member Goldberg, moved to nominate and appoint the above referenced individual to the aforementioned body, by the following vote: AYES: Mayor L. Johnson, and Ward 7 NAYS: None (Council Member Milteer was out of the chamber.) 0 5 City Council Regular Meeting November 20, 2019 ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMENTS Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation, Media and Community Relations Assistant Director Tim Kelley reported on the following: the City’s Grand Illumination; the Eighth Annual Artisan Gift Fair; R(e) Stored Pop-Up Shops and the City’s observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Council Member Fawcett announced he attended the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Awards and Recognition Ceremony. Council Member Duman reported he attended the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Awards and Recognition Ceremony and the Suffolk Public Schools College and Career Fair. Council Member Johnson opined about the Fiscal Year 2019 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. Council Member Johnson congratulated Major James Darden and Captain Calvin Bowe on their retirement from the Suffolk Sheriff’s Department. Council Member Johnson announced he attended the Healthy Suffolk luncheon. Council Member Johnson reported he met Coleen Santa Ana, the new President of Sentara Obici Hospital. Council Member Johnson opined about the Class of 1974 Forest Glen High School Reunion. Council Member Johnson congratulated Angela White, on her selection as the New Teacher of the Year for Lakeland High School. Vice Mayor Bennett acknowledged Suffolk Police Department on its receipt of various grants. Vice Mayor Bennett announced he attended the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Awards and Recognition Ceremony and a meeting at East End Baptist Church about the Coalition Against Poverty program. Mayor Johnson encouraged residents to attend the City’s Grand Illumination. Mayor Johnson opined about the upcoming Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization and the Hampton Roads Transportation Commission meetings. Mayor Johnson announced City Council would be returning into Closed Session. City Clerk Dawley presented the second Closed Meeting motion for City Council’s consideration: 1. Pursuant to Virginia Code Section 2.2-3711(A)(1), the discussion, consideration, or interviews of prospective candidates for appointment; and the assignment, appointment, and performance of specific public officers or appointees of the City, specifically Appointee evaluations. 6 City Council Regular Meeting November 20, 2019 Council Member Fawcett, on a motion seconded by Council Member Duman, moved that City Council convene in a second Closed Meeting for the above referenced purpose, by the following roll call vote: AYES: Mayor L.
