City Council Regular Meeting November 20, 2013 Regular Meeting of the Suffolk City Council was held in the City Council Chamber on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. PRESENT Council Members - Linda T. Council Member Milteer offered the Invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT CERTIFICATION City Clerk Dawley presented a resolution certifying the Closed Meeting of November 20, 2013, pursuant to Section 2.2-3712 of the Code of Virginia (1950), as amended. REMOVAL OF ITEMS FROM THE CONSENT AGENDA AND ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA Mayor Johnson asked if any members of City Council wished to remove any of the Consent Agenda items for separate action. Hearing no requests for removal of any items, Mayor Johnson advised that a motion was in order at this time to adopt the agenda as presented. ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMENTS Utilizing PowerPoint presentation, Media and Community Relations Manager Timothy Kelley reported on the following activities: ribbon cutting for Candie’s Place Adult Day Support; retirement of Ivy Crawford; 2013 MarCom Award in the Video/Film/Government Category received by the Media and Community Relations Department; Officer Antonio Diggs’ award as Suffolk Police Department’s 2013 Top Cop; the upcoming Suffolk Police Department Badge Pinning Ceremony; Suffolk Police Department’s holiday safety tips video; upcoming Flea Market and Bazaar; Thanksgiving operational hours; the upcoming Grand Illumination; the upcoming Annual Downtown Suffolk Holiday Open House; upcoming Holiday Artisan Gift Fair; A Christmas Story showing; upcoming Holiday Parade; upcoming Holiday Tea; information on reporting road problem or streetlight outage; information on updating civic league listings; and registration for the City newsletter. Council Member Fawcett offered Ivy Crawford and Officer Antonio Diggs congratulations on their aforementioned achievements. Council Member Fawcett offered Thanksgiving greetings and thanked those who offered condolences on his father’s passing. Council Member Ward advised he attend the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Suffolk Division meeting and Legislative Dinner. Council Member Ward offered condolences to the family of Denisheya King on her passing. Council Member Gardy reported he attended the ribbon cutting for Candie’s Place Adult Day Support. Council Member Gardy expressed appreciation to the Public Works Department for road repairs and extended Thanksgiving greetings. Council Member Duman advised he attended the Legislative Dinner and Sentara Obici Auxiliary’s Nobody Fights Alone Gala. Council Member Duman opined on the shooting of Denisheya King and extended condolences to Senator Creigh Deeds’ family regarding a recent family tragedy. Council Member Milteer said he attended the Saratoga Civic League meeting which reported recycling center and public safety concerns. Council Member Milteer opined on the shooting of Denisheya King. Council Member Milteer offered Thanksgiving greetings. Council Member Milteer Parr gave congratulations to Ivy Crawford on her retirement. 6 City Council Regular Meeting November 20, 2013 Council Member Parr opined on LeOtis Williams’ annual turkey giveaway. Council Member Parr offered congratulations to Officer Antonio Diggs. Council Member Parr sent condolences to the family of Denisheya King. Council Member Parr opined about the Legislative Dinner and closed with Thanksgiving greetings. Vice Mayor Brown advised he attended the Legislative Dinner meeting and LeOtis Williams’ annual turkey giveaway. Vice Mayor Brown congratulated Ivy Crawford and Officer Antonio Diggs on their accomplishments. Vice Mayor Brown gave Thanksgiving greetings. Mayor Johnson opined about the shooting of Denisheya King and stabbing involving Senator Creigh Deeds’ family. Mayor Johnson wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
