CSX RAILWAY – RAIL MAINTENANCE UPDATE
Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation, Public Works Director Louis Hansen gave a report on the above
referenced item.
Referring to the presentation, Council Member Goldberg called for additional information about any
potential traffic congestion as a result of the anticipated railroad crossing closures in downtown. Public
Works Director Hansen explained that staff has worked to minimize any possible traffic congestion as a
result of the anticipated roadway crossing closures. He further explained that the City asked CSX about
the viability of closing the railroad crossings in phases, but the nature of the maintenance does not make
that proposal feasible.
Referring to the presentation, Council Member Fawcett queried about any potential impact on public
safety vehicles as a result of the anticipated railroad crossing closures. Public Works Director Hansen
advised that both Suffolk Police Department and Suffolk Fire and Rescue Department were consulted
about the railroad crossing closures, and they reported no issues.
Vice Mayor Bennett sought information about the ownership of the railroad crossing at Nansemond
Parkway, near Suffolk Meadows. Public Works Director Hansen stated that railroad crossing is owned
by Commonwealth Railway.
Vice Mayor Bennett announced there was no motion for a Closed Meeting.
Vice Mayor Bennett advised that Mayor Johnson was excused from tonight’s proceedings.
Vice Mayor Bennett announced City Council would reconvene for its Regular Meeting at 7:00 p.m.
