Summerville Beautification Committee Meeting Minutes: Informal/Greeting January 20, 2017 Members: Barbara Blackwell* Heather Pallay Tana Caballero Kim Taylor* Deanna Haynes* Frances Townsend Tate Lawson* Special Members: Mayor Wiley Johnson Linda Walton (alternate for Kim Taylor)* *indicates absence Called to order: 1805 Old Business: None New Business: Introductions. Review of progress of the Committee since inception. Received Mayor’s guidance and hoped for vision. Discussed ideas for projects and areas of concern. List of Ideas o Emphasis on Education and changing the culture as it pertains to litter. o More street lights, trash cans downtown. Can those items match for cohesiveness? Who would pick up trash? Can those lights be solar powered? o Summerville is implementing biking and pedestrian lanes, as well as passive crosswalks that cost $7K per crossing o Sound proofing walls along Nexton  o Tag trees that are fallen, plant 2 for every 1 that falls o Saw Mill Branch Trail: Solar powered call boxes, River Birch along waterway-aides in beautification but also helps to retain banks with root growth, trash sculptures (ie, like save Edisto), planting native flowers and bushes, schedule clean up days, Lights along pathways, paved or otherwise improved parking lots. Maybe do a Sawmill Branch run for funding. o Armory: Citizens Center for meetings/gatherings, some would like Basketball hoop Courts. o Trimming low hanging branches over sidewalks (ie along N. Luke St.) o Crooked signs o Parking Lots (trash pickup) o Clean up traffic Islands either with plant maintenance and flower planting or trash pickup. o Cleaning drainage culverts from debris. o Double power poles not removed by SCE&G (produce a list) o Save the Magnolia Trees near Hutchinson Square.
