1 Summerville​ ​Beautification​ ​Committee​ ​(SBC)​ ​October​ ​Minutes -​ ​Draft October​ ​23rd,​ ​2017​ ​/​ ​6:30​ ​PM​ ​/​ ​Doty​ ​Depot,​ ​320​ ​N​ ​Laurel​ ​St. Attendees SBC​ ​Vice-Chair,​ ​Heather​ ​Pallay​ ​|​ ​SBC​ ​Member,​ ​June​ ​Van​ ​Steyn​ ​|​ ​Mayor​ ​Wiley​ ​Johnson​ ​|​ ​Susan​ ​Johnson Welcome H.​ ​Pallay​ ​welcomed​ ​everyone​ ​and​ ​noted​ ​that​ ​Deanna​ ​Haynes​ ​and​ ​Tana​ ​Caballero​ ​had​ ​relayed​ ​that​ ​they were​ ​unable​ ​to​ ​attend.​ ​T.​ ​Caballero​ ​did​ ​not​ ​provide​ ​an​ ​agenda​ ​for​ ​the​ ​meeting.​ ​At​ ​6:40PM​ ​H.​ ​Pallay called​ ​for​ ​informal​ ​discussion​ ​and​ ​updates.​ ​Quorum​ ​was​ ​not​ ​established​ ​thus​ ​no​ ​formal​ ​decisions​ ​were considered. Updates 1. H.​ ​Pallay​ ​relayed​ ​an​ ​update​ ​from​ ​T.​ ​Caballero​ ​that​ ​a​ ​new​ ​Dorchester​ ​County/Keep​ ​Dorchester Beautiful​ ​Director​ ​has​ ​been​ ​hired​ ​and​ ​will​ ​be​ ​in​ ​touch​ ​soon​ ​to​ ​continue​ ​ongoing​ ​discussions​ ​of available​ ​opportunities​ ​and​ ​partnerships. 2. H.​ ​Pallay​ ​commended​ ​June​ ​Van​ ​Steyn’s​ ​dedicated​ ​efforts​ ​to​ ​better​ ​educate​ ​local​ ​students​ ​about litter.​ ​J.​ ​Van​ ​Steyn​ ​approached​ ​the​ ​Summerville​ ​Garden​ ​Club​ ​and​ ​they​ ​donated​ ​copies​ ​of​ ​the Wartville​ ​Wizard​ ​by​ ​Don​ ​Madden​ ​to​ ​Summerville​ ​schools.​ ​The​ ​book​ ​provides​ ​a​ ​humourous ecology​ ​lesson​ ​for​ ​students.​ ​J.​ ​Van​ ​Steyn​ ​advised​ ​that​ ​she​ ​has​ ​reached​ ​out​ ​to​ ​all​ ​local​ ​schools​ ​and has​ ​received​ ​several​ ​responses.​ ​She​ ​completed​ ​a​ ​taped​ ​reading​ ​of​ ​the​ ​book​ ​at​ ​Flowertown Elementary​ ​on​ ​October​ ​13th,​ ​2017.​ ​The​ ​video​ ​is​ ​to​ ​be​ ​forwarded​ ​to​ ​other​ ​schools​ ​to​ ​be​ ​presented. She​ ​invited​ ​the​ ​committee​ ​to​ ​accompany​ ​her​ ​to​ ​a​ ​reading​ ​scheduled​ ​for​ ​October​ ​25th,2017​ ​at Summerville​ ​Elementary.​ ​H.​ ​Pallay​ ​noted​ ​that​ ​invitations​ ​should​ ​be​ ​extended​ ​to​ ​Town​ ​Council​ ​for future​ ​readings.​ ​J.​ ​Van​ ​Steyn​ ​also​ ​said​ ​several​ ​schools​ ​are​ ​interested​ ​in​ ​scheduling​ ​a​ ​spring reading. 3. H.​ ​Pallay​ ​asked​ ​Mayor​ ​Johnson​ ​for​ ​any​ ​updates​ ​regarding​ ​the​ ​Town​ ​becoming​ ​a​ ​Palmetto​ ​Pride affiliate.​ ​Mayor​ ​Johnson​ ​advised​ ​that​ ​SBC​ ​send​ ​a​ ​recommendation​ ​letter​ ​and​ ​information​ ​to​ ​the Town​ ​Clerk​ ​to​ ​Council,​ ​Beth​ ​Messervy. 4. H.​ ​Pallay​ ​expressed​ ​that​ ​it​ ​would​ ​have​ ​a​ ​positive​ ​impact​ ​on​ ​litter​ ​issues​ ​if​ ​the​ ​council​ ​took measures​ ​to​ ​show​ ​that​ ​they​ ​are​ ​leading​ ​by​ ​example.​ ​H.​ ​Pallay​ ​suggested​ ​that​ ​the​ ​Town​ ​consider alternatives​ ​to​ ​single​ ​use​ ​Polystyrene​ ​items.​ ​Mayor​ ​Johnson​ ​advised​ ​that​ ​SBC​ ​send​ ​a​ ​letter​ ​to​ ​the Town​ ​Administrator. 5. Mayor​ ​Johnson​ ​continued​ ​previous​ ​discussions​ ​of​ ​‘Pocket​ ​Parks.’​ ​He​ ​identified​ ​areas​ ​near​ ​W​ ​2nd N​ ​&​ ​Bryant​ ​Street,​ ​W​ ​2nd​ ​S,​ ​and​ ​Rollings​ ​Middle​ ​School​ ​as​ ​candidates​ ​for​ ​adoption​ ​and beautification.​ ​H.​ ​Pallay​ ​stated​ ​that​ ​ownership​ ​of​ ​these​ ​areas​ ​must​ ​be​ ​established​ ​as​ ​a​ ​first​ ​step. New​ ​Items  2 6. Mayor​ ​Johnson​ ​advised​ ​that​ ​SBC​ ​meeting​ ​times​ ​are​ ​now​ ​being​ ​published​ ​as​ ​part​ ​of​ ​Post​ ​& Courier’s​ ​Weekly​ ​Meeting​ ​Calendar. 7. There​ ​was​ ​general​ ​discussion​ ​about​ ​connectivity​ ​issues​ ​in​ ​Summerville​ ​for​ ​both​ ​roads​ ​and pedestrian/bike​ ​paths.​ ​This​ ​extended​ ​into​ ​discussion​ ​of​ ​a​ ​lack​ ​of​ ​way​ ​signs,​ ​specifically​ ​for​ ​better identifying​ ​routes​ ​to​ ​parking​ ​areas​ ​and​ ​pedestrian/bike​ ​paths. Action​ ​Items 1. Consider​ ​sending​ ​a​ ​letter​ ​to​ ​Town​ ​Clerk​ ​to​ ​Council​ ​recommending​ ​that​ ​the​ ​Town​ ​pursue becoming​ ​a​ ​Palmetto​ ​Pride​ ​&/or​ ​Keep​ ​Charleston​ ​Beautiful​ ​Affiliate. 2. Consider​ ​sending​ ​a​ ​letter​ ​of​ ​recommendation​ ​to​ ​the​ ​Town​ ​Administrator​ ​for​ ​the​ ​Town​ ​to​ ​create​ ​a plan​ ​to​ ​gradually​ ​reduce​ ​and​ ​eventually​ ​eliminate​ ​purchases​ ​of​ ​single​ ​use​ ​polystyrene​ ​items. Important​ ​Dates November​ ​17th,​ ​2017​ ​-​ ​Requests​ ​for​ ​agenda​ ​items​ ​for​ ​the​ ​November​ ​27th​ ​meeting​ ​are​ ​due​ ​by​ ​5PM. November​ ​27th,​ ​2017​ ​-​ ​The​ ​next​ ​SBC​ ​meeting​ ​is​ ​scheduled​ ​for​ ​November​ ​27th​ ​/​ ​6:30​ ​PM​ ​/​ ​Doty Depot,​ ​320​ ​N​ ​Laurel​ ​St.
