Minutes
In Memory of
Joseph F. Christie, Jr.
February 5, 1955 - February 10, 2017
Joe served as the Town of Summerville’s Director of Planning from July 9, 1984, to June 12,
2005. His dedication and leadership to the Town and the many service organizations of which he
was a member was greatly appreciated by the many citizens he assisted over the years. As a
recipient of the distinguished Eagle Scout Award, he generously served in a lifelong capacity as a
valued volunteer with Boy Scouts of America.
He was instrumental in establishing the Town Farmers’ Market in 1991, which has been in
successful continuance since its inception. He also assisted with the creation of DREAM
(Downtown Restoration Enhancement And Management), an organization dedicated to the
well-being of Summerville’s historic downtown. Both endeavors have been and continue to
serve as important foundation blocks in Summerville’s downtown viability.
Joe worked to expand the Town’s Planning Department with staff to implement proactive
planning efforts including enhancing the efforts regarding the Town’s designation as a Tree City
by Tree City USA; to establish commercial design review codes to ensure aesthetically pleasing
development occurs; and, to continue the growth of the Town by establishing well defined
jurisdictional boundaries preventing encroachment by other municipalities. Also, importantly,
he staffed the Town’s first Planning Commission, an appointed citizen board authorized to
recommend to Council those changes for the betterment of the community.
Joe’s humble passion for the Town of Summerville contributed to the continued success of this
community and for his thoughtful and generous spirit, this community is grateful.
Thank you, Joe.
