City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Wednesday, October 18, 2017 7:00 PM Neighborhood Room - Recreation Center, Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94087 CALL TO ORDER Chair Koppel called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. SALUTE TO THE FLAG Chair Koppel led the salute to the flag. ROLL CALL Present: 5 - Chair David Koppel Vice Chair Susannah Vaughan Commissioner Dawna Eskridge Commissioner Roberta Kiphuth Commissioner Darien Laird Council Liaison Klein (present) ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. CONSENT CALENDAR 1.A 17-0993 Approve Arts Commission Draft Meeting Minutes of September 20, 2017 Vice Chair Vaughan moved, and Commissioner Laird seconded, approval of the consent calendar as presented. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yes: 5 - Chair Koppel Vice Chair Vaughan Commissioner Eskridge Commissioner Kiphuth Commissioner Laird City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes October 18, 2017 No: 0 PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 17-0926 Promoting and Marketing Arts Program Community Services Manager, Trenton Hill provided the presentation "Engagement Through the Arts". Community Services Manager Hill discussed community feedback and engagement, and shared the public art survey results. Community Services Manager Hill stated "community" and "diversity" were the most common themes mentioned in the survey results and asked Commissioners to share their thoughts and ideas for promoting and engaging the community through art. Commissioner Laird stated providing fliers to the school districts is a great way to share information and would like to see more performing arts opportunities for children. Chair Koppel inquired about using the City's theater for events and performances, and suggested open mic nights and contests that will engage teens through art and music. Chair Koppel and Vice Chair Vaughan suggested community events that celebrate cultural diversity. Vice Chair Vaughan suggested an art park that provides space for people to perform and create visual art and hold scavenger hunts. An art park that makes art accessible to everybody in an atmosphere that is entertaining, educational and interactive. Commissioner Laird suggested reaching out to community members or volunteers that may want to lead or organize events at parks. Commissioner Eskridge suggested an open-air space, gallery or museum that showcases innovation and technology, corporate sponsored art contests and provide opportunities and venues for artists to share their artwork and knowledge. Commissioner Kiphuth suggested raising awareness of the importance of art as well as understanding the varied perspectives and forms of art. Also, find ways to engage people that are generally not interested or do not understand the value that art brings to a community and to a child's development. Ask local artists to help us City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes October 18, 2017 define what we want to do in the community and provide opportunities for artists to share their experience and what it means to be an artist. Commissioners also suggested promoting art and events through various media outlets. Superintendent of Community Services Dan Wax asked Commissioners to begin thinking about ideas or activities in which the Commission would commit to doing that could engage them with the community and provide the community with exposure to the Arts Commission. Superintendient Wax committed to identifying some ideas and presenting them to the Commission at a future meeting. STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES None. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments None. -Staff Comments Staff shared a video clip of the Oct. 3 City Council meeting that promoted the "Art on the Cart" contest.
