Remington Dr., Sunnyvale, CA 94087 CALL TO ORDER Chair Vaughan called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in the Neighborhood Room at the Recreation Center. SALUTE TO THE FLAG Chair Vaughan led the salute to the flag. Council Liaison Goldman (present) PRESENTATION 19-0564 Board/Commissions Study Issue Sponsorship Process Superintendent of Community Services, Damon Sparacino, provided an update on the Study Issue Sponsorship Process. Information included the new process, required steps and the new form. Handouts were provided to the commission with further information. Commissioners inquired: - Can you clarify the process? - If I turn one in now, would it be heard at the next meeting? Council Liaison Goldman let the commissioners know that they could also reach out to the council as they do not have any one lobbying for art in Sunnyvale. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. CONSENT CALENDAR 1.A. 19-0646 Approve the Arts Commission Special Meeting: AIPD Minutes of May 22, 2019 Commissioner Serrone moved and Vice Chair Eskridge seconded the motion to approve the Arts Commission Special Meeting: AIPD Minutes of May 22, 2019 as submitted. Chair Vaughan nominated herself for an additional term. No further nominations were presented. Chair Vaughan accepted the nomination. Chair Vaughan nominated Vice Chair Eskridge. Vice Chair Eskridge nominated herself and accepted the nomination. Vote on nomination for Vice Chair: Yes: 3 - Chair Vaughan Vice Chair Eskridge Commissioner Serrone No: 0 Absent: 1 - Commissioner Gluckman 3 19-0672 Approve Art in Private Development Project - T2 Development (Marriott Courtyard) 1235 Bordeaux Drive Community Services Coordinator, Kristin Dance, introduced Steve Dolan from the Andrea Schwartz Gallery. Mr. Dolan, advisor of the project, provided a presentation on the proposed artwork to be located at 1235 Bordeaux Dr. The presentation reviewed site specifics such as: location, visibility of artwork, scope, site specifics and artist's approach. The Commissioners inquired: - Has this artist done other work in Sunnyvale, possibly the AC Hotel? - Has the lighting at the AC been fixed? - Do the colors vary in the steel? - Is the piece easy to maintain? City of Sunnyvale Page 3 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes - Final July 17, 2019 - Is it really accessible to others? Not a lot around there. - Do you have an advertising plan? - Will there be a bike lane? Mr. Dolan or staff from T2 (Jerry Harlan, Norm Roberts, Rashir Patel and Greg Lebon) commented: - Yes, David Franklin also did the artwork at the AC Hotel. - Yes, and Ms. Dance will be joining us this evening to observe the lighting. - They do a little. Mr. Dolan processed to explain the aging process. He also noted that the artist will pre-age the steel. - Yes, they can be hosed down. - Commissioner Eskridge replied that during breaks and lunch there are a lot of people walking from the campuses nearby. - Mr. Harlan commented that they are working on widening the sidewalk to create pedestrian flow and that there will be a pedestrian plaza. - Mr. Roberts noted that there will be a cafe and other items to draw people in. - Mr. Patel commented that there is a full marketing team and that they are marketing to local businesses on what the hotel will offer. They will also be pushing items out on social media. - Yes, the city requires a bike lane. - Ms. Dance commented that as part of the Master Plan for Public Art, the City will also be expanding its marketing of the public art in Sunnyvale.She also noted that the City's Planning Department encouraged the developer to enhance the breezeway between the two buildings by incorporating the art. After all questions were addressed, Chair Vaughan asked if there was a motion to approve. Vice Chair Eskridge moved and Commissioner Serrone seconded the motion to approve the artwork as it is proposed. City of Sunnyvale Page 4 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes - Final July 17, 2019 NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments Commissioner Serrone inquired on the status of the Community Flags. Superintendent Sparacino replied that there would be an update under Staff Comments. -Staff Comments Community Services Coordinator, Kristin Dance, noted that the Chair Vaughan had sewn the Community Flags together, making six banners that each had 14 flags. The plan was to place two of the banners behind the Recreation Center front desk and two in the hallway of the Senior Center. Superintendent of Community Services, Damon Sparacino, passed out the July 17, Superintendent Report and provided an overview of the items. Superintendent Sparacino shared with the commissioners some Public Arts Projects that are on the horizon. Projects include: Civic Center, Phase 1, Fair Oaks Park and Washington Pool. Superintendent Sparacino also shared some items that staff would be working on. Those items include: Pilot Utility Box Art, Public Art Map, Brochure and Webpage and the reopening of the Creative Arts Center Gallery. Commissioners inquired: - Is it possible to get a 3D model of the new Civic Center? - Are you looking into sponsorship or donations for the gallery? Superintendent Sparacino commented: - There currently is a model in City Hall near the One Stop Center. - Not at the moment. Ms. Dance noted that in the future, we would be looking at grants.
