City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Board of Library Trustees Monday, June 4, 2018 7:00 PM Library Program Room, Sunnyvale Public Library, 665 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94086 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: 5 - Vice Chair Daniel Bremond Chair Carey Wingyin Lai Board Member Mason Fong Board Member Tina Hwang Board Member Mark Isaak Vice Chair Bremond arrived at 7:02 p.m. Council Liaison Klein (present) PRESENTATION 1 18-0012 PRESENTATION - Recognition of Service Mayor Hendricks presented Chair Lai with a certificate of appreciation for her service while on the Board of Library Trustees and congratulated her on being reappointed to a second term. Mayor Hendricks also thanked Board Members for their service. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 18-0011 Overview of 2018 Summer Reading Program Supervising Librarian, Sue Kaplan, provided an overview of this year's Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading Program takes place from June 1 to August 31, 2018 with prize pick-up during the month of August. Throughout the City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes - Final June 4, 2018 summer there will also be a wide variety of programs and events. The annual Summer Reading Program is designed to promote a love of reading and encourage children, teens and adults to read during summer break. Ms. Kaplan provided the Board with a brochure of other programs and events being offered during the summer. Ms. Kaplan closed her presentation by expressing the Library's appreciation of Friends of the Sunnyvale Library's continued financial support of the program. Board Members shared marketing suggestions for the summer reading program. Chair Lai opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimony, closed the public hearing. 3 18-0028 Update on Lakewood Branch Library and Learning Center Project Director Bojorquez provided the Board with an update on the Lakewood Branch Library and Learning Center Project. Staff continues to work on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City, Sunnyvale School District and Fremont Union High School District. The MOU will be presented at a future Joint Meeting of the Board of Library Trustees and Parks and Recreation Commission. In addition, the MOU will be presented to the school districts. Chair Lai opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimony, closed the public hearing. STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES Board Members inquired about the Study Issue process. Director Bojorquez provided an overview of the work flow process, development and objective of Study Issues. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Board Member Comments Vice Chair Bremond provided the Board with an overview of the upcoming Maker Faire Program to be held at the Palo Alto Public Library. Vice Chair Bremond noted that Repair Café volunteers will be participating in the event. -Staff Comments Director Bojorquez informed the Board of the following: - The Bay Area Young Adult Librarians (BAYA) have awarded the Sunnyvale Public Library a grant of $250 to purchase screen printing equipment and host a teen City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes - Final June 4, 2018 screen print workshop with a focus on activism and social awareness. Teens will create artwork representing their visions for the future of the community. Teens will then select one of two pre-burned screen slogans, "Future Voter" or "We the People", to be printed on their artwork. The teen program will be held on Sunday, July 1 at 3 p.m. The program is open to teens in grades 6 to 12; sign-ups start two weeks prior on June 17 at 9 a.m. at https://snv-screenprinting.eventbrite.com - The Annual Sunnyvale Art Club Exhibition is scheduled for Saturday, June 9 and Sunday, June 10 from noon to 5 p.m. at Sunnyvale Public Library. The work of more than forty local artists will be on display during the annual exhibition and outdoor painting demonstrations will also be held on the Library plaza. - The Summer Reading Program takes place this year from June 1 to August 31, 2018 with prize pick-up during the month of August.
