City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Board of Library Trustees Monday, July 1, 2019 7:00 PM Library Program Room, Sunnyvale Public Library, 665 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94086 CALL TO ORDER Chair Lai called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: 5 - Chair Carey Wingyin Lai Vice Chair Daniel Bremond Board Member Tina Hwang Board Member Mark Isaak Board Member Sharlene Wang Council Liaison Hendricks (absent) Board Member Hwang arrived at 7:45 p.m. PRESENTATION 19-0673 PRESENTATION - Children’s and Teen Services Overview Children's Librarian, Nancy Andrus provided an overview of the Children and Teen services in the Library. The Programs developed for babies, kids and teens are highly attended. The Children/Teen outreach programs include: City events, home day care visits, Columbia Neighborhood Center special programs, school partnerships, Bilingual storytime and training, and pop-ups/drop-ins. Board Members inquired about the types of questions asked of Children's Librarians, how staff keeps teens engaged in Library services, volunteer programs for teens with special needs, and the digital divide in Sunnyvale's youth population. 19-0674 PRESENTATION - Board/Commission Study Issue Sponsorship Process Lupita Alamos, Senior Management Analyst, reviewed the Study Issue Sponsorship process with the Board. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. CONSENT CALENDAR 1 19-0671 Approve the Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes of June 3, 2019 Vice Chair Bremond moved and Board Member Hwang seconded, approval of the Board of Library Trustees minutes of June 3, 2019. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 5 - Chair Lai Vice Chair Bremond Board Member Hwang Board Member Isaak Board Member Wang No: 0 PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 19-0657 Selection of Chair and Vice Chair Nominations were opened for Chair to the Board of Library Trustees. Board Member Isaak nominated Chair Lai who accepted the nomination. No further nominations were presented. Vote on nomination for Chair Lai for Chair: Yes: 5 - Chair Lai Vice Chair Bremond Board Member Hwang Board Member Isaak Board Member Wang No: 0 Nominations were opened for Vice Chair to the Board of Library Trustees. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Board Member Comments Board members inquired if it were possible to recieve emailed receipts when items are returned to the Library. Staff responded that emailed receipts are not an option with the current vendor. -Staff Comments Superintendent of Libraries, Steve Sloan informed the Board of the following: The second annual Sunnyvale Library Outdoor Expo on Saturday, June 22 on the library plaza had more than 400 participants. The children’s area at the Library now has four new AWE Early Literacy touchscreen computers. The Fines Amnesty study issue has been scheduled to be brought to the Board in September and Council in October ADJOURNMENT Chair Lai adjourned the meeting at 8:30 p.m. City of Sunnyvale Page 3
