1 Call to Order in the West Conference Room (Open to the Public)
Vice Mayor Melton called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.

Vice Mayor Melton announced Council will hear agenda item 3-Public Comment
after agenda item 4-Study Session.

19-1078 Review Results of Workforce Initiative That Creates
Partnerships to Develop a Pipeline for Students to Enter Public
Sector Employment (Study Issue)
Tina Murphy, Director of Human Resources provided an update for City Council on
the Human Resources Department's Study Issue for building a pipeline of students
for careers in the public sector. The presentation included an overview of the
current outreach by the City of Sunnyvale and NOVA Workforce Development with
internships, fellowships, job shadow days, career fairs, and the NOVA Youth
Program. The research also explored what other public agencies are doing to
provide students with future public sector employment opportunities and ideas to

attract the next generation of employees.
Councilmembers asked questions and made comments on the following items:
- Ideas and questions were presented by City Council that require additional
follow-up, including
- Partnerships with local universities, colleges, and trade schools
- Positioning some of the NOVA Youth Programming to careers in local government
- Development of internships with an eye to policy development and administration
or toward CAP 2.0
- Expansion of LRNG with NOVA and Library and Community Services
- Career exploration for students interested in non-STEM careers
- Student exposure to regional programs that feature the public sector as a good
place to work
- Providing tools to help City Council and employees with internship information
The Human Resources Department will return to Council with recommendations in
the Spring 2020.

item which is subject to Code of Civil Procedure 1094.5.
