City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes Heritage Preservation Commission Wednesday, January 8, 2014 7:00 PM West Conference Room, City Hall, 456 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94086 CALL TO ORDER Chair Stanek called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. SALUTE TO THE FLAG ROLL CALL Present: 5 - Commissioner Mark Johnson Commissioner Mike Michitaka Commissioner Dale Mouritsen Vice Chair David Squellati Chair Jeanine Stanek Council Liaison Tara Martin-Milius: absent SCHEDULED PRESENTATION None PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS None CONSENT CALENDAR 14-0078 Draft Minutes of the Heritage Preservation Commission Meeting of December 4, 2013 Commissioner Mouritsen made a motion to approve the draft minutes of December 4, 2014, as amended. Commissioner Michitaka seconded. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 4 - Commissioner Johnson Commissioner Michitaka Commissioner Mouritsen Chair Stanek No: 0 City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Heritage Preservation Commission Meeting Minutes January 8, 2014 Abstain: 1 - Vice Chair Squellati PUBLIC COMMENTS None PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 1.A 14-0080 HPC Final 2014 Work Plan Comm. Michitaka noted his planned absence for March. Commissioners adopted the 2014 Workplan by the following vote. Yes: 5 - Commissioner Johnson Commissioner Michitaka Commissioner Mouritsen Vice Chair Squellati Chair Stanek No: 0 2 14-0081 Review of the Code of Ethics Chair Stanek asked staff why the Code of Ethics is dated with the previous year. Mr. Kuchenig responded that he was unsure why the City Clerk distributes the Code of Conducts with a previous year date but this has always been the case. The Commissioners confirmed that they have reviewed the Code of Ethics. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS Comm. Michitaka stated that Iizuka City Council has voted to sign the Friendly Exchange Relations Agreement with the City of Sunnyvale. He stated that both cities are now in agreement, and will be visiting IIzuka, Japan regarding the Friendly Exchange Relations Agreement. Comm. Michitaka noted that a visit is planned, which also includes students from Fremont High School. City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Heritage Preservation Commission Meeting Minutes January 8, 2014 INFORMATION ONLY REPORTS/ITEMS Chair Stanek noted that the Historical Society has a newsletter and passed one around to the Commission. Comm. Michitaka pointed out that there are legal issues when they send exchange students abroad, and that they decided to purchase liability insurance. In turn, he asked staff how the Commission is protected from liability, and if they have a form of insurance. Mr. Kuchenig stated that he would follow up with the City Attorney’s office. Chair Stanek noted that she attended last night’s Council meeting and asked for their support for the study issue sponsored by the Commission. Chair Stanek updated the Commission regarding the Butchers Corner property. She mentioned that City Council is considering a study to protect the house on the property, if the property gets annexed to the City. Comm. Johnson commented that he was able to visit the Heritage Park Museum with his family and noted that they enjoyed their visit. He further stated that he would like to see more artifacts regarding technological events that have occurred and more history of the City’s cultural diversity. Vice Chair Squellati noted that he was able to visit the Goodwill and Spalding buildings downtown. He stated that he is pleased with the changes that are occurring.
