City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Sustainability Commission Monday, July 20, 2015 7:00 PM West Conference Room, City Hall, 456 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale, CA CALL TO ORDER Chair Paton called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. in the West Conference Room. SALUTE TO THE FLAG Chair Paton led the salute to the flag. ROLL CALL Present: 4 - Chair Bruce Paton Vice Chair Amit Srivastava Commissioner Barbara Fukumoto Commissioner Gerald Glaser Absent: 3 - Commissioner Brian Glazebrook Commissioner Petya Kisyova Commissioner Dan Hafeman Commissioner Hafeman's and Kisyova's absences are excused. Council Liaison - Tara Martin-Milius (absent) PRESENTATION 15-0728 PRESENTATION - Update on Sunnyvale’s Efforts in the Georgetown University Energy Prize Challenge Elaine Marshall, Environmental Programs Manager, provided a brief update on the Sunnyvale’s efforts to raise awareness and promote energy efficiency in an effort to win the Georgetown University Energy Prize. Since the January update, key activities undertaken included among other items: launching the Energize Sunnyvale campaign, establishing the website (Energize.inSunnyvale.com), promoting DIY Home Savings Toolkits, hosting energy efficiency and EnergyUpgrade CA workshops, and working with neighborhood volunteers to develop a strategy for reaching out to the neighborhood associations. 15-0726 COMMISSIONER PRESENTATION - Leading Edge Sustainability Practices City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes - Final July 20, 2015 The Commissioners shared information about leading sustainability practices from other communities (GHG targets and accomplishments, VMT goals, Net Positive policies, and transportation practices) and discussed how Sunnyvale may benefit by adopting similar goals. The Commission is interested in inviting Marianna Grossman of Sustainable Silicon Valley to a future meeting to provide a presentation about their Net Positive Bay Area efforts. PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS None. CONSENT CALENDAR 15-0725 Draft Minutes of the Sustainability Commission Meeting of June 15, 2015 Commissioner Glaser moved, and Commissioner Fukumoto seconded, a motion to approve the June 15, 2015 meeting minutes. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 3 - Chair Paton Commissioner Fukumoto Commissioner Glaser No: 0 Absent: 3 - Commissioner Glazebrook Commissioner Kisyova Commissioner Hafeman Abstain: 1 - Vice Chair Srivastava Vice-Chair Srivastava abstained because he was not present at the meeting. PUBLIC COMMENTS None. PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 15-0727 Election of Officers This item was deferred to the August 17, 2015 meeting. City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes - Final July 20, 2015 NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments Commissioner Glaser shared that he is designing a new house and the architect has brought in a zero energy consultant and it will be interesting to see what the consultant recommends. Commissioner Glaser also shared that the demand for electric buses is tremendous and that work to electrify vehicles is growing exponentially. The industry is having a hard time keeping up. Chair Paton shared that he and Commissioner Fukumoto attended the recent forum on Sea Level Rise hosted by Congresswoman Anna Eshoo and Assemblyman Rich Gordon. A panel that included representatives from private industry, the Water District, County of Santa Clara, and Mountain View shared different views and perspectives about sea level rise impacts and discussed the problems they are most concerned about. Commissioner Fukumoto noted that a key takeaway for her from the forum is that planning has to start now. Commissioner Fukumoto is interested in inviting the County to an upcoming Commission meeting to share the results of Silicon Valley 2.0. Commissioner Srivastava noted that he noticed during a recent bike ride along the Bay Trail how many homes are built adjacent to the Bay Trail in vulnerable areas. Commissioner Srivastava also shared that on a recent trip to Paris, he experienced what a bike friendly city is was and was amazed by how easy it was to get around the city by bike. -Staff Comments Elaine Marshall, Environmental Programs Manager, informed the Commission that the new Sustainability Coordinator will be starting on July 28, 2015 and that she will begin training the Coordinator and transitioning the role of staffing the Commission over the next few meetings.
