City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Sustainability Commission Monday, June 20, 2022 7:00 PM Telepresence Meeting: City Web Stream CALL TO ORDER Pursuant to Government Code Subdivision 54953(e), the meeting was conducted telephonically; pursuant to state law, the City Council made the necessary findings by adopting Resolution No. 1089-21, reaffirmed on May 24, 2022. Vice Chair Kunz called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. via teleconference. ROLL CALL Present: 3 - Commissioner Kristina Pistone Commissioner Tonya Veitch Commissioner Justin Wang Absent: 2 - Chair Kristel Wickham Commissioner Murali Srinivasan Council Liaison – Councilmember Hendricks (present) Chair Wickham and Commissioner Srinivasan’s absences are excused by general consent. Vice Chair Kunz, all Commissioners, and Councilmember Hendricks attended via teleconference. PRESENTATION 22-0666 PRESENTATION - Recognition of Service Councilmember Hendricks thanked Commissioner Padgett and Vice Chair Kunz for their years of service on the Sustainability Commission. He commended them and the Sustainability Commission for their contributions to moving the City’s sustainability initiatives forward. 22-0663 PRESENTATION - Resilience Hubs [Commissioner Presentation: Veitch] City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes - Final June 20, 2022 Commissioner Veitch provided an overview of Resilience Hubs, resources for cities and upcoming opportunities. Commissioners asked clarifying questions, and Commissioner Veitch provide responses. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. CONSENT CALENDAR 1 22-0665 Approve the Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes of May 16, 2022 Commissioner Wang moved, and Commissioner Veitch seconded, a motion to approve the consent calendar. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 4 - Kunz Commissioner Pistone Commissioner Veitch Commissioner Wang No: 0 Absent: 2 - Chair Wickham Commissioner Srinivasan PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 22-0379 Draft Proposal for FY 2022/23 Sustainability Speaker Series The Sustainability Speaker Series Subcommittee, composed of Commissioners Veitch, Wang and Pistone, presented the Draft FY 2022/23 Sustainability Speaker Series Proposal. The theme for this series is “Food and Climate,” and includes the following seven proposed topics, for up to four events to be hosted in FY 2022/23: (1) Sustainable and Equitable Agriculture; (2) Regenerative Aquaculture; (3) Community-based Agriculture; (4) Induction Cooking; (5) Food Recovery; (6) School Districts, Food, and Sustainability; (7) Food Systems and Climate Resilience. The Subcommittee also presented potential speakers for each topic and potential talk titles. The Commission discussed the pros and cons of each topic and clarified differences between topics. Staff tabulated the individual rankings and provided the following ranked list of City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes - Final June 20, 2022 topics: (1) Induction Cooking; (2) Community-based Agriculture; (3) Sustainable and Equitable Agriculture; (4) School Districts, Food, and Sustainability; (5) Food Recovery; (6) Food Systems and Climate Resilience; (7) Regenerative Aquaculture. Commissioner Veitch moves, and Commissioner Wang seconded, a motion to approve the FY 2022/23 Sustainability Speaker Series topics as prioritized and authorize staff to make edits to the draft proposal, based on the presentation provided by the subcommittee, to finalize it. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 4 - Kunz Commissioner Pistone Commissioner Veitch Commissioner Wang No: 0 Absent: 2 - Chair Wickham Commissioner Srinivasan STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES None. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments Commissioner Veitch encouraged commissioners to attend Sustainable Silicon Valley's Sustain-a-palooza on June 22 and 23, 2022. Vice Chair Kunz announced that Menlo Park and San Jose City Council both approved strategies for existing building electrification. -Staff Comments Shannon Keener, Environmental Programs Specialist, shared that Sunnyvale hosted a Drive Electric program test drive event on June 18, 2022. The event was held at Baylands Park from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and approximately 140 test drives occurred. Madeline Willett, Interim Environmental Programs Manager, shared there were 32 attendees at the Sustainability Speaker Series event on June 8, 2022, with Violet City of Sunnyvale Page 3 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes - Final June 20, 2022 Saena. She shared that Doug Kunz was reappointed to the Sustainability Commission and that Jeff Nabhan, Facilities Manager at BayCounties Waste Services, was appointed to the vacant category two seat. She also shared that City Council approved the Silicon Valley Clean Energy Community Resiliency Grant projects and acceptance of the $1,327,680.
