CALL TO ORDER
Chair Wickham called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. in the Bay Conference
Room (Room 145) at City Hall.

STUDY SESSION
23-0816 Climate Action Playbook Update: 2021 GHG Inventory
Madeline Khair, Environmental Programs Manager, and Christina Raby,
Environmental Engineering Coordinator, presented the 2021 Greenhouse Gas
Inventory results and provided Game Plan 2028 updates. Commissioners asked
clarifying questions, and staff provided answers.

Chair Wickham provided an overview on climate budgeting and examples from cities
currently implementing it. Commissioners asked clarifying questions, and Chair
Wickham provided answers.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Ralph Kenton inquired about Sunnyvale’s garbage and recycling programs and
requested guidance on sorting waste at home.
CONSENT CALENDAR
23-0738 Approve the Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes of
June 19, 2023
Chair Wickham noted that the agenda attendance was missing Commissioner
Besser’s presence.
Commissioner Besser moved, and Vice Chair Kunz seconded, a motion to approve
the consent calendar reflecting Commissioner Besser’s presence at the June
meeting.

Chair Wickham provided an overview of the Chair and Vice Chair selection process.
Chair Wickham opened the floor to nominations for the office of Chair.
Commissioner Nabhan nominated Vice Chair Kunz to serve as Chair. Vice Chair
Kunz accepted the nomination.
With no further nominations, Chair Wickham closed the floor for the nominations for
the office of Chair.

NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS
-Commissioner Comments
Commissioner Veitch noted that the County will be hosting an induction cooking
demonstration event in San Jose on September 26. The event will have a former
contestant from Top Chef cooking, and the event will be spoken in Vietnamese.
Commissioner Besser shared that the Cherry Hill neighborhood is hosting their 14th
Annual Harvest Share event on Sunday, August 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. on Kelsey Drive
near Syracuse Drive. The event provides an opportunity for community-building and
sharing surplus harvests with neighbors. The event is open to the public, free of
charge, and attending does not require a contribution.
Commissioner Pistone shared that Taylor Street Farm in San Jose is always looking
for volunteers during the weekdays and weekends, and that volunteers can take
home food that is grown locally at the farm. Commissioner Pistone also shared that
the National Academy of Sciences is hosting an online event on Thursday, August
24 at noon. The event will discuss how K-12 schools can reduce their carbon
emissions.
Chair Wickham requested that Commissioners save the date for an Electric Home
Tour with sponsorship from Silicon Valley Clean Energy, Peninsula Clean Energy
and Palo Alto Utilities. The event will be on October 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and
there will be roughly 20 to 30 San Mateo and Santa Clara county homes featured
on the tour.

Ms. Raby reported on previously hosted events and reminded Commissioners of
upcoming events and the deadline for submitting Study Issue forms.
