City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes Sustainability Commission Monday, July 15, 2024 7:00 PM Online and Bay Conference Room, City Hall, 456 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94086 CALL TO ORDER Chair Kunz called the meeting to order at 7:09 p.m. in the Bay Conference Room (Room 145) at City Hall. SALUTE TO THE FLAG Chair Kunz led the salute to the flag. ROLL CALL Present: 6 - Commissioner Douglas Kunz Chair Tonya Veitch Commissioner Cortney Jansen Commissioner Bobbykin Makwana Vice Chair Jeffery Nabhan Commissioner Richard Parenteau Absent: 1 - Commissioner Kristina Pistone Commissioner Pistone's absence was excused by general consent. Council Liaison - Councilmember Melingher (present) PRESENTATION 24-0790 PRESENTATION - Water Conservation Update Mansour Nasser, Water & Sewer Systems Division Manager, provided an update on water conservation programs in Sunnyvale as well as state and regional policy impacts. Commissioners asked clarifying questions, and staff provided answers. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. CONSENT CALENDAR City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes July 15, 2024 24-0791 Approve the Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes of June 17, 2024 Commissioner Nabhan moved, and Commissioner Parenteau seconded, a motion to approve the consent calendar. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 5 - Commissioner Kunz Chair Veitch Commissioner Makwana Vice Chair Nabhan Commissioner Parenteau No: 0 Absent: 1 - Commissioner Pistone Abstain: 1 - Commissioner Jansen PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 24-0792 Selection of Chair and Vice Chair Chair Kunz provided an overview of the Chair and Vice Chair selection process and stated he would like to step down as Chair of the Sustainability Commission. Chair Kunz opened the floor to nominations for the office of Chair. Commissioner Nabhan nominated Vice Chair Veitch to serve as Chair. Vice Chair Veitch accepted the nomination. With no further nominations, Chair Kunz closed the floor for the nominations for the office of Chair. The Commissioners voted to elect Vice Chair Veitch to serve as the Chair as follows: Yes: 6 - Commissioner Kunz Chair Veitch Commissioner Jansen Commissioner Makwana Vice Chair Nabhan Commissioner Parenteau City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes July 15, 2024 No: 0 Absent: 1 - Commissioner Pistone Vice Chair Veitch was elected as Chair of the Sustainability Commission. Chair Kunz opened the floor to nominations for the office of Vice Chair. Vice Chair Veitch nominated Commissioner Nabhan to serve as Vice Chair. Commissioner Nabhan accepted the nomination. With no further nominations, Chair Kunz closed the floor for the nominations for the office of Chair. STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES None. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments Commissioner Jansen shared that on August 3, 2024, there is a Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action Youth Summit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Quinlan Community Center in Cupertino. City of Sunnyvale Page 3 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes July 15, 2024 Commissioner Nabhan announced the SMaRT Station will begin operating its new, more efficient food scraps machine on July 16, and an open house is planned in August. -Staff Comments Christina Raby, Environmental Engineering Coordinator, reported on past and upcoming events. Madeline Khair, Environmental Programs Manager, announced she will be taking maternity leave beginning in August.
