Golf Course Committee (Meets 4th Thursday as needed, at 11:00 a.m.)

GOLF COURSE COMMITTEE PROCEEDINGS October 11, 2021 Noon Nemadji Club Room at Nemadji Golf Course and Remotely via ZOOM Members Present: Barb Hoag, Troy Clark, Jack Sweeney, Lindsey Graskey (virtual), Bob Kolbe, Keith Kern (virtual) Advisory Members and Others Present: Linda Cadotte, Ashley Puetz, Tom Beaudry, Tom Andersen, Vince Dodge, Members Excused: Golf course meeting called to order at 12:02 p.m. 1. Seeking approval of the September 13, 2021 Golf Course Committee meeting minutes MOTION by Sweeney, seconded by Clark and carried, to approve the September 13, 2021 meeting minutes. 2. 2022 Meeting Schedule and Committee Appointments Cadotte stated that the she spoke with the Mayor’s office and that the intent was to continue one year and that the current committee members will be reached out to by Nick Raverty to see if they are interested in being appointed again. Hoag stated she enjoys the diversity in background among the members of the golf course committee and is happy with who is currently involved. Andersen suggested moving the meeting dates to the 4th Monday of the month in order for Kemper to have the previous month’s financials ready for the meeting. MOTION by Clark, seconded by Kolbe and carried, to approve meeting the 4th Monday of the month in 2022, starting in January. 3. 2021 Season Recap Beaudry said it was a very good year again. 2022 is coming in 20% ahead of last year so far but that the numbers aren’t final. Beaudry said they have learned a lot this year. Operations this year were closer to normal and he now feels he has a better idea of the baseline they are working with. Kolbe asked what the most common reoccurring complaint is. Beaudry stated it is pin placement which is a matter of education and explaining to people why they are doing what Golf Course Committee Meeting 1 October 11, 2021 they are doing. Vince said this is a complaint he has heard at every course he has ever worked at. Sweeney asked if there is a relationship between the amount of holes played and revenue dollars. He also asked if there is an expected % breakdown for every revenue dollar earned, what % will come from golf, food and beverage, etc. Beaudry stated yes there is. 4. Standing agenda items: a. Profit/Loss – Budget/Actual Statement a. Beaudry stated August was another great month from the revenue standpoint. Increased service levels were reflected in the payroll expenses. The longer season results in additional expenses. Rounds were solid for the month. b. General Manager/Golf Pro – report a. Beaudry mentioned the building was painted in August. Working on achieving level 2 of green to a tee. TrueService results continue to trend in the right direction. Current score is 75.8% with 70% being the company base goal. Nemadji was named Best of the Best Golf Course by the Duluth News Tribune for the second year in a row. Beaudry met with a simulator company that came to the course recently and took measurements. c. Superintendent – Grounds/Maintenance report a. Dodge stated there is thatching issues with 2.5 to 3 inches of thatch on some of the fairways. Water and oxygen struggle to get through to the soil causing unhealthy turf and the roots can rot. Dodge also stated he has wonderful staff this year. b. Sweeney asked what property was damaged by golfers from the report. Dodge said it’s common for golfers to run over garbage cans with their carts and that someone is cutting ropes on the course. d. General Manager top three concerns. a. Beaudry said food and beverage continues to be a challenge. Sourcing carts and dry conditions also continue to be issues. e. Nemadji Women’s and Men’s Club – concerns/updates a. Clark stated the men’s club year end meeting is next Wednesday evening. b. Hoag stated she would like Dodge to attend the women’s spring meeting for education. Hoag also relayed comments she has received from community members. The first comment was about making the twilight golf earlier since sunset is earlier this time of year. Beaudry stated they moved twilight to 4pm to coincide with 7pm sunset. The next comment was a suggestion to offer a daily rate for students who show a student ID. Beaudry said this is a good idea he will look into. The last comment was a concern about the new pin placements with information displayed on the scorecards. The concern is that not everyone uses Golf Course Committee Meeting 2 October 11, 2021  scorecards. Beaudry stated they will also use stickers on the golf carts and will work to also educate people. 6. Next meeting – Spring 2022 a. Next meeting will be Monday, January 24th as 12:00 p.m. at a TBD location. MOTION by Kolbe, seconded by Clark and carried, to adjourn.
