MAYOR’S COMMISSION ON COMMUNITIES OF COLOR Minutes September 9, 2019 Present: Chair Kym Young, Jerel Benton, Natasha Lancour, Deonne Nelson, Eimony Tatyana Canito, Rani Gill Excused: Stephan Witherspoon, Pat St. Germaine 1. Call to Order. Commissioner Young opened the meeting at 4:19 pm. 2. Approval of Minutes of August 12, 2019 Meeting. Motion by Benton, seconded by Lancour. Motion passed. 3. Election of new Commission Chair Young stated this was her last meeting. Nominations were taken for the new Chair. Witherspoon got 5 votes to be the new Chair. Motion by Benton, seconded by Nelson to accept the nominations and elect Witherspoon as the new Chair of the Commission. Motion passed. 4. Indigenous People’s Day Event Planning. A resolution introduced by the Commission to recognize and celebrate Indigenous Day in place of Columbus Day was passed by the City Council at their August 20th meeting. There will be a celebration in the Atrium of the Government Center on October 14th and also an event at UWS in the evening. A proclamation will be issued and read by Mayor Jim Paine at both events. 5. New Commission Members – Renee Goodrich Recruited by Lancour. Goodrich needs to send an email requesting to be appointed to the Commission. Have not received anything to date. 6. School District CCC Ambassador Young will send an email to Schools District Administrator Amy Starzecki, introducing Eimony Canito as the Commission’s Ambassador to the School Board. Canito will attend meetings as her schedule allows and will report back to the Commission. Mayor’s Commission on Communities of Color Minutes Page Two September 9, 2019 7. Any other business. None 8. Next meeting Monday, October 7, 2019 @ 4:00 pm, in Room #300. (This is being held a week earlier due to the Celebration of Indigenous People’s Day on October 14th ). 9. Adjournment. MAYOR’S COMMISSION ON COMMUNITIES OF COLOR AGENDA Monday, September 9, 2019 4:00 pm – Room #300 MISSION: Identify barriers to opportunity and full participation for people of color in the Superior community. The Commission will discuss, research, and propose policy solutions to direct systemic problems within the City of Superior. The Commission will represent people of color from throughout Northern Wisconsin and the Twin Ports and seek to advance their interests and, in so doing, advance the interests of a diverse and vibrant community.
