Roll Call 2. Approval of July 12 minutes MOTION by Van Sickle, seconded by Nikoi and carried, to approve. 3. Update on Coordinated Response Specialist from Chief Alexander Captain Winterscheidt from the Superior Police Department (SPD) informed the commission a conditional offer had been made to a candidate with hopes of them starting in late September. They are currently undergoing the background check, pre-employment screening, and other necessary conditions before a formal offer can be made. There were 33 applicants and 24 were interviewed using the selection process that was approved by city council. Commissioners asked Captain Winterscheidt questions on how the position will be supported, what training will look like, and what is expected in the first 6-12months. Captain Winterscheidt talked about the foundational training and education this candidate would receive and its similarities and differences from regular officers. The individual does have social work experience, but will need some police-specific training. This position will also co-respond with officers most of the time. The SPD is looking into an advisory committee for this position and talking to other communities with similar positions to learn from them. The main goal in the first year will be to build a rapport with the community and collect resources, while building the program from the ground up. 4. Discuss sponsorship of Unity in the Community launch event ($200) MOTION by Werchouski, seconded by Nikoi and carried, to hold in committee until the next regular meeting. c: City Clerk’s Office Public Access – via e-mail 5. Any other business Commissioner Reder asked that everyone please reply to the poll to sign up for a trail clean-up day. Mayor Paine is looking for recommendations for new commission members. Commissioner Van Sickle gave an update on the land transfer taking place with Fond du Lac. Discussion about upcoming Indigenous People’s Day programming and events. 6. Future agenda items 7. Roll Call 2. Approval of May 10 minutes Motion by Commissioner Nelson, seconded by Commissioner Lancour and carried, to approve. Abstaining: Commissioner Nikoi 3. Approval of May 24 minutes Motion by Commissioner Nelson, seconded by Commissioner Werchouski and carried, to approve. Abstaining: Commissioner Nikoi 4. Discuss sponsorship of Unity in the Community launch event ($200) Commissioner Nelson gave an overview of Unity in the Community and what she envisioned for the launch event. The commissioners asked several questions pertaining to timing, logistics, and other funding. Commissioner Werchouski asked what the balance of the account is. Nick Raverty informed the commission the balance was $450 for the remainder of 2021. Motion by Commissioner Werchouski, seconded by Commissioner Lancour and carried, to hold in committee until the August meeting. 5. Discuss proposals for city staff training Commissioner Reder gave an overview of the three proposals that were submitted for the city staff diversity, equity, and inclusion training. The commission discussed the content and delivery method of each proposal. The commission also chose to set the precedent that this training would be the baseline for trainings moving forward for city staff. While this training is being completed the commission will continue to explore what the next round of trainings and their scope should be. Motion by Commissioner Werchouski, seconded by Commissioner Nikoi and carried, to support the use of the proposed CVMIC trainings, excluding the 7 hour course, for all city employees with the intention to expand with further training in the future. 6. Any other business Nick Raverty gave a short update on the Coordinated Response Specialist recruiting process. The commission requested the names of the interview panel and that Chief Alexander give an update at the next meeting.
