Overview of Where We Are & Where We Are Going The first meeting on March 16, 2021 allowed the Task Force members to meet each other, become oriented with the charge of this group, and lay a foundation for the next weeks of work. Councilmember Searcy and others shared the City's commitment to a community-driven process led by community members. The meeting covered a high-level review of the research and data folder that will become an ever-evolving space for reports, data sets, research, stakeholder audits, and more to inform the Task Force's work. a. Task Force members were asked to reflect on what “success” will look like in the work of this group. Themes included: i. Focusing on marginalized communities when discussing policy reform. ii. Ensuring racial justice and economic justice are key priorities. iii. Continuously engaging and educating the community along the process. iv. Reassessing policies and systems across government. v. Discussing the role of policing in Takoma Park and looking at city services holistically from mental health, disability services, homelessness, and much more. III. Closeout & Next Steps a. The meeting on March 16, 2021 ended with remarks from City Manager Ludlow and Mayor Stewart, sharing the City's commitment to this process and commitment to providing resources to help the Task Force succeed. b. The next meeting will take place March 23rd from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm and will primarily focus on presentations from city government leadership in order to give Task Force members a foundational knowledge of the current public safety systems.
