Approved, February 3, 2022 100 Riveredge Road, Tenafly, NJ 07670 MINUTES Thursday, December 2, 2021 Chairperson Karen Neus called the Zoom meeting to order at 8:03 pm. The announcement was made regarding compliance with the Open Public Meetings Law. Roll Call Members Present: Karen Neus, Mike Barone, Rita Heller, Dave Wall & Emily Yang Members Absent: Richard Bennett, Reno Danese & Council Liaison Jeff Grossman Approval of Minutes The minutes for November were approved with the minor change from Mrs. Heller. Mrs. Neus stated that Ms. Booth, HPC Secretary submitted the HPC’s recommendation to rename the Train Station to “Elizabeth Cady Station Train Station—Tenafly to Mayor & Council. Moved by: Mr. Barone, seconded by: Mr. Wall. Unanimously approved. Certificates of Appropriateness Mrs. Neus stated that the HPC has not received any new Certificate of Appropriateness applications this past month. An amendment was submitted and approved as a “Minor” application for the Certificate of Appropriateness application at 10 Huyler Avenue. The owner and contractor discovered previous substantial damage to the chimney when they opened an interior wall, making the chimney unstable and in danger of falling. The owner requested and received approval to remove the chimney from above the roofline. Mrs. Neus said she spoke with new owner of 177 Hudson Avenue. They have been in contact with contractors and architects and were inquiring about the regulations for owning a historic home. Budget Mrs. Neus inquired about the end of year process required by the Finance Department. Ms. Booth explained that depending on when an order is placed and good/services are received, the corresponding purchase order is applied to either the current year or the following year. Mrs. Neus went over the expenditures from the last year with the Commission, noting that most 2021 expenditures by the Commission related to public education and promotion of the History of Tenafly. Old Business  The Walking Tour The Brochure will be sent to the printer within the next couple of weeks. A few minor changes had to be made and once approved by the subcommittee it will be sent off to Bucks Digital for printing.  Pending Grant Projects 1) Roosevelt Monument—The Borough received another extension of the County Grant so the Borough can pursue the lighting design of the monument. A local landscape design company will complete the installation of the lighting. A meeting will be scheduled for the following week with the Borough  engineer to discuss the next steps. 2) Tenafly Railroad Station---Barton Ross will be hired as the Special Projects Architect for the Borough. He will be overseeing the bid process, collections of estimates and construction administration of the interior electrical and cupola work. The project and its budget will need to be scaled back due to the reduced amount of money awarded by Bergen County. Updates from Council Liaison Mrs. Neus informed the Commission that there is no update from Council. New Business  Expiring Terms--Mrs. Neus noted that both Reno Danese and David Wall will not be renewing their terms with the Commission. Mr. Wall has served in various roles in the Borough for more than thirty years. Mr. Wall previously served as Assistant Borough Historian under the Borough's first Historian, Virginia Mosley, and is known for his walking tours and written histories of Tenafly. Mrs. Neus thanked Mr. Wall for his dedication to the Commission and the Borough of Tenafly.  Upcoming Priorities 2022 Discussion—Mrs. Neus stated in addition to the distribution of the Walking Tour Booklet that the Commission would also be working on the signage for renaming the Railroad Station.  David DiGregorio, Media Center Director from the High School Library joined the meeting and discussed his project to restore the Lambs Studio Stained Glass pieces. There are five panels that will be hung in the center courtyard of the library once restored; one of those has been hung. Mr. DiGregorio also stated that the High School has six or seven Harvey Dunn paintings depicting the life of President Abraham Lincoln that are in need of restoration. He is hoping that they can be restored and displayed for everyone to see. Opportunity for Public to Speak Natalie Kavanagh, 83 Hazelton Terrace, inquired about the Demarest Lyle house and if the Borough would be interested in acquiring the property. Mrs. Neus stated that the HPC does not have that authority and was directed Mrs. Kavanagh to write a letter to the Mayor. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 9:48pm by Mrs. Neus.
