Tulare Library Advisory Board Meeting Tulare Public Library | 475 North M Street | Tulare, CA December 20, 2017, at 4:00pm | TPL Charter Room Facilitator: Lisa Hollingshead | Minutes: Melissa Emerson Attendees: Lisa Hollingshead; Ellen Baker; Terry Sayre; Donna Schauland; Alejandra Alfaro; Alexandra Arroyo; Heidi Clark; Melissa Emerson; Mollie Roache; and, Jane Zikratch City of Tulare Mission Statement: To promote a quality of life making Tulare the most desirable community in which to live, learn, play, work, worship and prosper Agenda Topic Speaker Time I. CALL TO ORDER Lisa Hollingshead 2 4:05pm II. CITIZEN COMMENTS: This is the time for citizens to comment on items within the Lisa Hollingshead 2 jurisdiction of the Advisory Board. The Board cannot legally discuss or take official action on citizen comments that are introduced today. Each speaker will be allowed 3 minutes, with a maximum of 10 minutes per item, unless otherwise extended by the board. None III. COMMUNICATIONS: Communications are to be submitted 10 days prior to a Lisa Hollingshead 2 meeting to be considered for this section of the Agenda. No action will be taken on matters listed under Communications; however, the Board may direct staff to schedule issues raised during Communications for a future agenda. Citizen comments will be limited to 3 minutes per topic, unless otherwise extended by Board. None Alejandra Alfaro IV. ITEMS OF STUDENT INTEREST Alexandra Arroyo 5 Getting ready for Winter Break and glad that finals will be over. V. CONSENT CALENDAR: All Consent Calendar items are considered routine and will Lisa Hollingshead 2 be enacted in one motion. There will be no separate discussion of these matters unless a request is made, in which event the item will be removed from the Consent Calendar to be discussed and voted upon by a separate motion.  Approval of Minutes – November 15, 2017 Ellen motioned that the minutes be approved as they are written; Donna seconded.  Approval of change in policy language for laptop checkout & public bulletin board Mollie revised the two policies with minimal changes. Main change for laptops is that we are no longer limiting them for job searching (as was required for the grant that they were purchased with),and a photo ID is no longer required to be held at Circulation while the laptop is checked out. Public Bulletin Board requests can be decided by any staff. The procedure will be written later. Terry motioned that the policy updates be approved; Ellen seconded. VI. SCHEDULED CITIZEN OR GROUP PRESENTATIONS None Lisa Hollingshead 2 VII. GENERAL BUSINESS Lisa Hollingshead 3  Community Services updates 10 None  Snapshot of Stats & Library Update Heidi Clark 10 November stats are lower than October due to school breaks and City Holidays. Library Staff 10 Lisa: Is the library getting any 3 day weekends? Heidi: So far we are just getting our regular Sun-Mon. off Board Members and the holiday is put in our vacation time. Tulare County has started to close on a few of the Saturdays for Monday holidays & we will see if this affects how busy we are.  Programs & Outreach (Food 4 Fines; Volunteer Recognition recap; Paint Night; COHS graduation 1/20/2018 ) Heidi: Volunteer recognition brunch went well---had about 40 come. First “Paint Night” will be 1/18; limited to 10 people. FOL paying for supplies; if successful will be offered every other month. Jane: Online High School getting ready for first graduates. Ceremony will be January 20th, 3:30-4:30. Will have caps and gowns. Mayor scheduled to speak and Foundation/Advisory Board members welcome to attend. Ellen and Donna volunteered to attend the graduation on behalf of the Advisory Board. Ellen added that she would like to bring a rose for each graduate to recognize what an achievement they have made. Heidi: Adult Reading Challenge will be a year-long program for adults 16 and older. Saw this at another library and looked like something good to try here. Every month readers will choose a different category of book, take their picture with it and post it online or bring it in and show a staff member. Staff will initial their game board and give a ticket for a monthly drawing. If all reading challenges are met, reader is entered in a grand prize drawing which will be held next January. Mollie: We are changing our computer classes and adding more one-on-one opportunities. One Tuesday night class and one Saturday morning class will be held for intermediate learners. The one-on-ones will focus more on beginners or anyone who just needs a little help using their phone, laptop or other device.  Suggestions from the Board None VIII. ITEMS OF BOARD MEMBER INTEREST Lisa Hollingshead 2 Donna complimented library staff on how organized the adult non-fiction has been looking.
