Tulare Library Advisory Board Meeting Tulare Public Library | 475 North M Street | Tulare, CA January 18 2017, at 4:00pm | TPL Charter Room Facilitator: Lisa Hollingshead | Minutes: Melissa Emerson Attendees: Lisa Hollingshead; Michelle Lippincott; Donna Schauland; Rob Hunt; Heidi Clark; Melissa Emerson; Sarah Fly; and, Jane Zikratch City of Tulare Mission Statement: To promote a quality of life making Tulare the most desirable community in which to live, learn, play, work, worship and prosper Agenda Topic Speaker Time I. CALL TO ORDER 4:05pm Lisa Hollingshead 2 II. CITIZEN COMMENTS: This is the time for citizens to comment on items within the Lisa Hollingshead 2 jurisdiction of the Advisory Board. The Board cannot legally discuss or take official action on citizen comments that are introduced today. Each speaker will be allowed 3 minutes, with a maximum of 10 minutes per item, unless otherwise extended by the board. III. COMMUNICATIONS: Communications are to be submitted 10 days prior to a Lisa Hollingshead 2 meeting to be considered for this section of the Agenda. No action will be taken on matters listed under Communications; however, the Board may direct staff to schedule issues raised during Communications for a future agenda. Citizen comments will be limited to 3 minutes per topic, unless otherwise extended by Board. IV. ITEMS OF STUDENT INTEREST None Marissa Moya & Yesenia 5 Zepeda V. CONSENT CALENDAR: All Consent Calendar items are considered routine and will Lisa Hollingshead 2 be enacted in one motion. There will be no separate discussion of these matters unless a request is made, in which event the item will be removed from the Consent Calendar to be discussed and voted upon by a separate motion.  Approval of Minutes – November 16, 2016 Michelle motioned to approve; Donna seconded. Motion carried by all.  Dec. 21, 2016, meeting cancelled due to lack of quorum VI. SCHEDULED CITIZEN OR GROUP PRESENTATIONS Lisa Hollingshead 2 VII. GENERAL BUSINESS Lisa Hollingshead 3  Snapshot of Stats & Library Updates Heidi Clark: Heidi Clark 10 2016 Passports Accepted: 1,947 total February 9th there will be an inspection by the State Library Staff 10 Department. The Self-Check computers are back up. Problems 10 Board Members system-wide had them shut down, but now fixed.  Upcoming Programs & Outreach (Project Homeless Connect; Community Round Table; Chamber event; Enterprise update; etc.) Heidi Clark: We will have an information booth at Project Homeless Connect on January 26th; On January 27th the library will be hosting an Community Round Table for local organizations. Jane Zikratch: The library will be represented at the annual Chamber of Commerce Man/Woman of the Year event on January 20th. She and Cat Lippincott will be setting up and decorating our table with a “Sleuth” based them---highlighting all of the print and electronic resources the library provides. The Veterans Resource Center (VRC) has chosen military- themed movies to show around the President’s Day holiday. We will be again hosting some financial and small business classes. Jane Zikratch and Melissa Emerson presented a talk on early literacy to a parents’ group at Maple Head Start. Heidi Clark: We received a 3D “Bill of Rights” display---it was placed in the space by the Test Book shelf. On February 25th, from 10am-12pm, the Sequoia Genealogical Society will partner with the Latter Day Saints Church to present a Black History Month event here at TPL. They will focus on the many resources that African-Americans can use to research their family history. Are working on an African-American Database. The library will have a “Blind Date with a Book” display in February, where patrons check out a wrapped book which they can only see the title after they have checked it out. Tax forms will be available as they are received. Melissa Emerson: Also on February 25th, the Youth Department will celebrate “Read Across America Day” (Dr. Seuss’ Birthday) with a special Story Time and Craft at 1pm. On February 18th we will have a Black History Month Story Time and Craft that will focus on the quilts used as maps by the “Underground Railroad” to guide slaves to freedom. Melissa and Heidi will be working with the school district on the MOU for the school libraries. Will again be presenting book talks to the sixth grade classes and will work on other projects as needed. Jane Zikratch: The VRC has a new work-study applicant. Our Career Online High School (COHS) has a new student, making a total of 6 out of 10 possible. Each has 18 months to complete the program. Rob Hunt: On January 27th at 9am the Board of Public Utilities and the City Council will be having a Budget Workshop. Another Budget Session will be held by the Council on February 24th.  Suggestions – Library Advisory Board Michelle Lippincott: Has the library considered the suggestion of offering a student scholarship for teen volunteers?
