CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 4:03pm. Lisa Hollingshead 2 II. CITIZEN COMMENTS: This is the time for citizens to comment on items within the Lisa Hollingshead 2 jurisdiction of the Advisory Board. The Board cannot legally discuss or take official action on citizen comments that are introduced today. Each speaker will be allowed 3 minutes, with a maximum of 10 minutes per item, unless otherwise extended by the board. None III. COMMUNICATIONS: Communications are to be submitted 10 days prior to a Lisa Hollingshead 2 meeting to be considered for this section of the Agenda. No action will be taken on matters listed under Communications; however, the Board may direct staff to schedule issues raised during Communications for a future agenda. Citizen comments will be limited to 3 minutes per topic, unless otherwise extended by Board .None IV. ITEMS OF STUDENT INTEREST Yesenia spoke about a program at Marissa Moya & Yesenia 5 Western called Wish Week, in which other students granted Zepeda wishes for special needs students: being a cheerleader, part of the soccer team; going out to lunch, etc. One of the stories was picked up on local tv. Also a program providing SAT prep free to students. V. CONSENT CALENDAR: All Consent Calendar items are considered routine and will Lisa Hollingshead 2 be enacted in one motion. There will be no separate discussion of these matters unless a request is made, in which event the item will be removed from the Consent Calendar to be discussed and voted upon by a separate motion.  Approval of Minutes – February 15, 2017 Ellen moved, Terry seconded. Minutes approved. VI. SCHEDULED CITIZEN OR GROUP PRESENTATIONS none Lisa Hollingshead 2 VII. GENERAL BUSINESS Lisa Hollingshead 3  Snapshot of Stats & Library Updates Reviewed “Snapshot Jane Zikratch 10 of Stats”; numbers slightly down, but Feb. is a short month. Library Staff 10  Passport Activity Increase – considering options— discussed ways of dealing with the noticeable increase in 10 traffic without negatively impacting library services and Board Members mission. Staff will do further research into what other libraries are doing. Options include moving to appointment-based scheduling, limiting number of applications accepted per day. The question was posed about whether we are allowed to charge a “service” or “convenience” fee, above the execution fee. Board approved possible change to appointments as of April 1, depending on further info and staff feedback.  Upcoming Programs & Outreach (Be Your Own Boss workshop, Kiwanis-importance of reading to kids, Spring Garden Fest program, host CALVIN meeting, National Library Week) Many fun programs coming up: Be your own Boss and Importance of Reading on 3/22; Garden Festival w/Master Gardeners on 4/1; CALVIN meeting on 4/5; National Library Week events $9-4/!5.  Rob Hunt report: Lily Pad closed. Some interest has been expressed. Waiting game. City will be working on advertising. Library manager application period closed on 3/19. Interviews will be 4/20.City Council looking at shifting some boards to be more reflective of Council districts. There will be a Development Needs Assessment meeting @ 6:30 on 3/16 and a budget session @ 12:30 on 3/17  Suggestions – Library Advisory Board—Ellen expressed thanks to staff for keeping everything going in the wake of Sara’s departure. Lisa Hollingshead 1 53 Snapshot of Stats Passport demand increase Without question, we have seen an increase in passports. We accepted 295 applications this February, as opposed to 188 in Feb. last year; an increase of 107 applications or 56% The increase in January was not quite as dramatic: 194 this year vs. 170 last year, for an increase of 24 applications or 14% This past December we did 104 compared to 81 the previous year, an increase of 23 applications or 28% Saturday passports have really skyrocketed: In February we handled 123 on Saturdays only, and in January our Saturday total was 78; an increase of 55 applications, or a whopping 70% from one month to the next! The applicants are mostly children. Looking back at the transmittals as far as Saturday, Feb. 11 th, we served 116 children and 71 adults; a difference of 35, or 49% more children than adults.
