PRESENTATIONS
1. Presentation by Tom Murtagh, Professional Filmmaker
Local filmmaker Tom Murtagh presented his proposal to produce a 60 second tourism video for Visit 29 Palms
and started his presentation with a look back at this documentary film that celebrates German tourists love for
riding Harley Davidson motorcycles through the southwest deserts. Tom explained his proposal, outlining how
he and his team provide full production services from helping with the concept, to shooting and editing, to
professional audio and subtitles, to providing a short teaser video for use on social media. The TBID board
declined to vote on Tom’s RFP, instead asking the Director of Marketing to collection more RFP’s.
2. Presentation by JNS Next - Andrew Portener, Digital Marketing Manager
Digital Marketing Manager Andrew Portener provided an introduction and overview of the digital marketing
services JNS Next are providing, detailing the process of search engine optimization, search engine marketing,
and digital display ad campaigns. Andrew confirmed that the first SEM and digital display ad campaign went
live on February 28, 2019 and highlighted the campaigns success in its first week. Portener explained how the
ads are being strategically targeted, and shared screenshots of the search engine marketing ads, as well as
samples of the first display ad that features a collage of images promoting outdoor adventure, with a call to

No two people’s experience of the desert is the same just as no city is the same as another.
29 Palms is one-of-kind. Living and working here as we do, we see 29 Palms as a special
destination with a desert allure that will quench any visitor’s thirst for adventure. They just
need to know more about us.
Our goal with this short film is to quickly introduce the city to those working in the tourism
industry as well as anyone just wanting to know more about this special location in the Hi-
Desert. We’ll touch on the city’s unique historical, cultural and geological diversity,
creating a specific sense of place that distinguishes 29 Palms from JT or Palm Springs.
In terms of capturing our audience’s imagination and curiosity, we see this film’s story* as
moving from wide and majestic to intimate and personal.
For example, we’ll begin with stunning drone shots of the Joshua Tree Park and build
momentum with cinematic images of cultural and historical features of the city-- touching
on intimate portraits of the murals, our artists and merchants all welcoming visitors
verbally, as a way to punctuate our running Voiceover commentary.

punctuate our running Voiceover commentary.
The VO would also be structured to move from broader, expansive 29 Palms Messaging,
to the city’s more specific charms. Structurally, we’d move from iconic shots of the park
and move closer to feature such things as:
- The JTNP Visitor Center.
- Rangers at the Entrance.
- Looming mountains.
- The Indian Cove Entrance.
- 49 Palms.
- The City’s Murals
We’d feature exterior and interior shots of some of the amazing accommodations in
town, such as the 29 Palms Inn, Campbell House, Harmony Hotel (a pilgrimage for the
band U2 fans), Best Western, Airbnbs, etc…
Page 7 of 16
We’d introduce restaurants and lounges through specific owners, hosts and/or servers
and people enjoying their meals and drinks… including such favorites as:
Edchada’s. 29 Palms Inn Restaurant. Mojave Moon. Kitchen in the Desert.
We’d weave in images of art, artists and unique treasures. Such as: Desert Rebel.
Mojave Sol. Smitty’s. Cowboy Attic. Glass Outhouse, Art-O-Motive, 29 Palms Art
Gallery, even Bands performing at The Palms in Wonder Valley.
We’d include scenic images of Marines on base, base operations and getting haircuts at
the many barber shops, such as Stud Cuts.
And we will create a clear, coherent Voiceover narration for the piece that will tease the
audience and pull them into our short story.
We would use a tag line that attaches to Visit 29. Some of our concepts include:
29 PALMS.
A LITTLE FARTHER.
This plays off the physical distance from Joshua Tree and Palm Springs while creating an
enticing incentive to explore the cool options and city’s unique brand identity.

COME FOR THE/STAY FOR THE…
This is a kind of call and response that delineates specific city amenities and reminds
viewers/visitors of our proximity to JTNP.
Come for the Park…Stay for the shopping.
Come for the hiking…Stay for the restaurants.
Come for the sunsets…Stay for the sunrises.
29 PALMS. REDEFINING ADVENTURE
This focuses on opening people’s minds to our city.
29 PALMS. YOUR GATEWAY TO ADVENTURE
This references our location as a true Gateway to Joshua Tree National Park.
APPROACH
We see this as a highly cinematic film, using high-resolution digital video and still
photography. Using music, voice over and dynamic editing, we’ll build a short film with
energy, style and momentum that will leave spark our viewers curiosity and create a
desire to see for themselves all that 29 Palms has to offer.

BUDGET
To deliver this film on your deadline, our budget accounts for the following:
All creative content would need to be approved by TBID by end of business day February
4th. Subsequent editorial milestones will be determined upon approval of creative/final
shooting schedule. This milestone provides adequate time to secure locations,
production and on-camera subjects (merchants, tourists, etc).
One week of pre-production/prep, three days principle photography, three days of post
production (including off-line and online editorial, music composition and final mix.
Three edited cuts of film based on overnight notes turnaround (rough cut, fine cut,
finish/polish). All crew, equipment rental (including drone and operator), production
sound mixer, editor, voiceover artist and composer.
Budget total: $4000 (contingent on above stated creative milestones).
We’re excited to begin a continued collaboration with your entire 29 Palms TBID team.
Thank you for considering us,
Tom Murtagh and Dean Carpentier
