II. PUBLIC INPUT
Gloria Yen, from The New American Welcome Center at the University YMCA, spoke about the
services the welcome center provides to immigrants in the community. The welcome center helps
immigrants integrate into American society and helps prepare receiving communities in Champaign
County to be more welcoming and inclusive. This is a program of the YMCA and has about 52
community advocates. The New American Welcome Center is asking for $20,000 in social service
funding.
III. CONSOLIDATED SOCIAL SERVICE FUNDING DISCUSSION
Grants Manager Kelly Mierkowski said the reviewing committee consisting of Kelly Mierkowski,
Matt Rejc and Danielle Chynoweth, had met over several days and reviewed 30 applications
submitted by over 21 agencies. Over half of the agencies were contacted for additional information.
Mayor Marlin explained that the committee hoped to have final recommendations by May 21, with
the Committee of the Whole considering the recommendations at the June 11 meeting and
recommendation for final approval at the June 18 council meeting.
Big Brother Big Sisters was not on the list of agencies currently being considered for funding. There
was concern voiced about agencies that consistently applied for funding, but not on the current list,
had missed being notified. It was suggested that the committee contact agencies that had not yet
responded to be sure they received the necessary information to submit their applications before the
deadline. CM/Trustee Brown and CM/Trustee Jakobsson said they would notify agencies if
committee members were unable to do so.
