Sustainability Advisory Commission Meeting

CITY OF URBANA, ILLINOIS SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY COMMISSION City Council Chambers Tuesday, April 2, 2013 Commissioners Present: Chairperson Marya Ryan, Vice Chair Stephen Wald, Amelia Neptune, Rachel Vellenga Commissioners Absent: Gary Cziko, John Marlin, Todd Rusk Staff Present: Scott Tess, Kate Brickman Call to Order, Roll Call, and Declaration of Quorum The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. Kate Brickman called the roll and a quorum was present. Changes to the Agenda There were no changes to the agenda submitted. Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting A motion was made by Ms. Vellenga, second by Ms. Neptune, to approve the minutes from the March 5 meeting. Motion carried. Public Input There was no public input. Communications Staff Report Scott Tess gave the April Staff Report that included the status of various Goals and Actions from the Climate Action Plan. Tess also provided information concerning a City RFP for the purchase of renewable energy credits, and the scheduling of a rain barrel and compost bin truck sale. He noted that the May SAC meeting is scheduled for May 7. Continuing Business Sustainable Water Management Plan Draft Scott Tess gave an update on the draft version of the Sustainable Water Management Plan indicating that he would like to present the document for public input on Earth Day, April 22. Commission members commented on the draft and discussion ensued. A motion was passed to present the draft for public input on April 22. Steve Wald recommended an ongoing active interest in the Mahomet Aquifer and continuing to build our relationship with our recharge area. Climate Action Plan Scott Tess relayed that he was in the process of setting up the first of the CAP task forces, the one dealing with Commercial and Residential Properties. He asked that one SAC member be assigned and that other Commissioners email him potential interested parties. Tess also mentioned that he is currently looking for speakers to address pharmaceutical waste collections in Illinois. New Business There was no new business to discuss. Announcements Scott Tess announced that a countywide electronics recycling event, free to participants, will be held on Saturday, April 20 from 8 a.m. until noon at The News Gazette Distribution Center located at 3202 Apollo Drive, Champaign. Amelia Neptune announced that the Champaign-Urbana community will celebrate its fourth annual Bike to Work Day on Wednesday, May 1, that she would forward a schedule of Earth Week events at the University of Illinois, and that there will be a Greenways and Trails event at the Illinois Terminal. Adjournment There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:33 p.m. This meeting was recorded.
