CITY OF URBANA, ILLINOIS SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY COMMISSION Council Chambers Tuesday, November 5, 2013 Commissioners Present: Chairperson Marya Ryan, Vice Chair Stephen Wald, John Marlin, Amelia Neptune, Todd Rusk, Rachel Vellenga, Ryan Wolber Staff Present: Scott Tess, Kate Brickman Call to Order, Roll Call, and Declaration of Quorum The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. Kate Brickman called the roll and a quorum was present. Changes to the Agenda There were no changes to the agenda. Marya Ryan announced that this would be the last meeting for John Marlin. The commission thanked him for his invaluable service. Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting Motion was made by Mr. Wald, second by Mr. Rusk, to approve the minutes from the October 1, 2013 meeting. Motion carried. Public Input There was no public comment. Communications Staff Report Scott Tess gave the monthly Staff Report that included updates on various Goals and Actions from the Climate Action Plan and the Sustainable Water Management Plan, updated Public Works policies, a waste audit at a City facility to be performed by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, and information regarding the countywide electronics recycling event held on October 12. He noted that the December SAC meeting would need to be rescheduled because of a conflict in council chambers. SAC agreed on December 10 as the next meeting date. Staff Request for Names of Experts Scott Tess asked Commissioners for names of experts to give presentations on renewable energy credits and also to speak on climate adaptation. Various names were listed with Tess requesting information be sent to him via email. Presentation by Courtney Rushforth, City of Urbana Recycling Coordinator Courtney Rushforth, Recycling Coordinator, presented information regarding U-Cycle Mapping and a Public Engagement Project completed by an intern this past summer. She plans to do further studies like this in the future to bolster the currently successful recycling program. Continuing Business There was no continuing business. New Business There was no new business. Announcements Stephen Wald made the following announcement: Switch: Discover the Future of Energy documentary film and discussion with Dr. Scott W. Tinker being held on December 3 at 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Hall Theater, 702 S. Wright Street in Urbana. Rachel Vellenga made the following announcement: Habitat It and They Will Come being held November 7 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Anita Purves Nature Center in Urbana. Scott Tess made the following announcement: Sustainable Choices 2040 Public Forum being held on Wednesday, November 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Illinois Terminal in Champaign. Adjournment There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:56 p.m. This meeting was recorded.
