CITY OF URBANA, ILLINOIS SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY COMMISSION Council Chambers Tuesday, August 5, 2014 Commissioners Present: Chairperson Marya Ryan, Bart Bartels, Todd Rusk, Andrew Stumpf, Rachel Vellenga, Ryan Wolber Commissioners Absent: Vice Chair Stephen Wald Staff Present: Scott Tess, Kate Brickman Call to Order, Roll Call, and Declaration of Quorum The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. Kate Brickman called the roll and a quorum was present. Changes to the Agenda There were no changes to the agenda. Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting Motion was made by Mr. Bartels, second by Ms. Vellenga, to approve the minutes from the July 1, 2014 meeting. Motion carried. Public Input Sage Johnson and Saba Manetti-Tesfaya, students from the Urbana School District, briefly presented information about a play entitled “Pester Power” that will be presented in various community forums to show the importance of reducing our carbon footprint. The commission granted them additional time beyond the 5-minute limit to make their presentation and take questions from the commission. Communications Staff Report Scott Tess gave the monthly Staff Report that included updates on various Goals and Actions from the Climate Action Plan (CAP) and the Sustainable Water Management Plan and an update on Progress for both. The report also addressed various U·Cycle activities related to the upcoming Sweetcorn Festival later this month. The Report stated September 2 as the next meeting date. Ms. Ryan took the opportunity to thank Ryan Wolber for his service with SAC as he leaves for other endeavors. Continuing Business Climate Action Plan (CAP) Scott Tess began by reminding the Commission of the CAP Phase II timeline; draft to Plan Commission and Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Commission, Public Input period, and then forwarding to Committee of the Whole. Tess also reviewed various edits that have been suggested and made since the last meeting and stated that he would send a final draft for the Commission to review before the September meeting. New Business Green Office Challenge Bart Bartels, Commission member and Sustainability Outreach Specialist with the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center discussed the Green Office Challenge. The Challenge is a competition among office buildings in Urbana, Champaign, Bloomington, Norman and Peoria to achieve energy and water conservation and waste reduction. Registration begins September 1 and the Challenge begins October 1. Additional information can be found at www.illinoisgoc.com. Announcements Ms. Vellenga announced a Sierra Club Prairie Group fundraiser for the Kickapoo Rail Trail on Thursday, August 28 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Sleepy Creek Vineyards east of St. Joseph. Adjournment There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 8:44 p.m. This meeting was recorded.
