CITY OF URBANA, ILLINOIS SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY COMMISSION Executive Conference Room, Urbana City Building Tuesday, April 7, 2015 Commissioners Present: Chairperson Marya Ryan, Vice Chair Stephen Wald, Bart Bartels, Morgan Johnston, Todd Rusk, Andrew Stumpf, Rachel Vellenga Staff Present: Scott Tess Call to Order, Roll Call, and Declaration of Quorum The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. Scott Tess called the roll and a quorum was present. Changes to the Agenda There were no changes to the agenda. Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting Motion was made by Ms. Johnston, second by Ms. Vellenga, to approve the minutes from the February 3, 2015 meeting. Motion carried. Public Input There was no public input. Communications Staff Report Scott Tess gave the monthly Staff Report that included progress for the Climate Action Plan (CAP) Phase 2 highlighting the areas of the green building certifications, engagement with Ameren Illinois concerning ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and virtual net metering, request to the Illinois State Water Survey for revisions of design storm standards, and the U-C ENERGY STAR Challenge awards. Additionally, the report noted a City Green Team update, Public Engagement at the University and Green Drinks social hour. Related to the Sustainable Water Management Plan, Tess mentioned the upcoming rain barrel and compost bin sale, Fix a Leak Week involvement, landscape irrigation upgrades, reductions in overall City facilities water consumption, tree selections for the planting program, and the designation of a portion of the Mahomet Aquifer system as a sole source aquifer. Scott Tess handed out copies of an Environmental Sustainability Performance Metrics memorandum and a letter staff sent to state legislators requesting funding for electronic recycling programs. The Report stated May 5 as the next meeting date. Renewable Energy Presentation Kevin Borgia, Policy Manager for Wind on the Wires, a nonprofit that represents wind energy developers and manufacturers, gave a presentation on general wind power issues and how communities can get involved. Illinois Water Day Fernanda Maciel, a student at the University of Illinois Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, gave an informational presentation on Illinois Water Day being held on Friday, April10 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the NSCA Auditorium, 1205 W. Clark Street in Urbana. The event is held annually as part of the UN World Water Day, a global recognition of the importance of safe, clean and abundant water resources across the world. Continuing Business There was no continuing business to address. New Business There was no new business to discuss. Announcements The following announcements were made: • Boneyard Creek Community Day on Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Scott Park in Champaign; • Spring Leaf Collection the weeks of April 13-17 and April 27-May 1 on U-Cycle collection days; • Rain Barrel and Compost Bin Sale on Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of north of the City building at 400 S. Vine Street in Urbana; • Prairie Research Institute Annual Naturally Illinois Expo on April 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and April 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Forbes Natural History Building and the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center in Research Park; • The University of Illinois is working toward Tree Campus USA recognition; and • A Stop Work Order has been put in place for current projects funded by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Renewable Energy Grant; • Mayor Prussing was awarded the 2015 Public Official Award from the Illinois Water Environment Association; and • The University of Illinois quad now has a dual bin recycling system. Adjournment There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 8:48 p.m. This meeting was recorded.
