Sustainability Advisory Commission Meeting

CITY OF URBANA, ILLINOIS SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY COMMISSION Council Chambers, Urbana City Building Tuesday, May 3, 2016 Commissioners Present: Chairperson Marya Ryan, Vice Chair Stephen Wald, Bart Bartels, Morgan Johnston, Todd Rusk, Andrew Stumpf Staff Present: Scott Tess Call to Order, Roll Call, and Declaration of Quorum The meeting was called to order at 7:01 p.m. Scott Tess called the roll and a quorum was present. Ms. Ryan took a moment to thank Mr. Bartels and Ms. Voitek for their service to SAC. Both will be leaving to take on new opportunities. Changes to the Agenda There were no changes to the agenda. Approval of Minutes Motion was made by Ms. Johnston, second by Mr. Stumpf, to approve the minutes from the March 1, 2016 meeting. Motion carried. Public Input There was no public input. Communications Presentation UIUC Active Transportation Coordinator Lily Wilcock, the new Active Transportation Coordinator at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign gave a presentation on Active Transportation at the University of Illinois and detailed sustainable transportation efforts on campus. Staff Report Scott Tess gave the monthly Staff Report which included progress on the Climate Action Plan (CAP) Phase 2, highlighting qualifications for the Green Power Partnership recognition program, review of a bid for installation of a solar array, the local onsite renewable energy market, various arbor related goals, another round of the Urbana-Champaign ENERGY STAR Challenge, and a potential energy and water saving collaboration between the City’s Environmental Sustainability and Grants Management Divisions. Related to the Sustainable Water Management Plan, Tess mentioned two In Progress items and included a summary of the most recent Illinois EPA water quality report. Additionally, various U-Cycle public engagement events were noted. The Report stated June 7, 2016 as the next meeting date. Additional Environmental Performance Metrics Tess shared the Urbana Waste Diversion Report for Calendar Year 2015. The report highlighted community garbage, recycling and composting activities and provided diversion rates and participation in the U-Cycle recycling program. Additionally, Tess discussed the Annual Environmental Performance Metrics report that was provided to City Council. This report looks at greenhouse gas trends, community kWh consumption, and City facility energy usages. The Commission conversed about the information. Continuing Business There was no continuing business. New Business There was no new business. Announcements Mr. Stumpf introduced Dr. Jorge Rabassa, Director of the Centro Austral de Investigaciones Científicas at Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, who will present a lecture titled “Climate Change Over the Past Few Millenia in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, Argentina” on May 10, 2016 at 2:15 p.m. in Room 201 of the Illinois State Water Survey, 2204 Griffith Drive, Champaign. Scott Tess announced the Urbana & Champaign Sanitary District Waste Water Treatment Plant Open House on May 21, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Southwest Water Treatment Plant, 2404 Rising Road, Champaign. Mr. Wald relayed information concerning May being National Bike Month and tomorrow being Bike to School Day in Urbana and Champaign. For more information please visit http://cubikemonth.weebly.com/.
