Sustainability Advisory Commission Meeting

APPROVED CITY OF URBANA, ILLINOIS SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY COMMISSION Council Chambers, Urbana City Building Tuesday, March 3, 2020 Commissioners Present: Dustin Allred, Megan McGinty, Andrew Stumpf, Morgan White, Maddy Garbacz Commissioners Absent: Stacy Gloss, Megan McGinty, Tomas Delgado Staff Present: Scott Tess Call to Order, Roll Call, and Declaration of Quorum Andrew Stumpf called the meeting to order, a roll was called. However, the meeting was not announced, so the meeting had to end with only presentations to be had. Approval of Minutes No action could be taken at this point due to the meeting not having been publicized. Changes to the Agenda There were no changes or additions to the agenda. Public Input There was no public input Champaign County Environmental Stewards Dominique Gilbert from a research arm of the Army Corps of Engineers, dealing primarily on Waste- related issues, and President of Champaign County Environmental Stewards, which raises awareness for hard-to-manage waste materials. Ms. Gilbert shared planned a Household Hazardous Waste collection for Champaign County on April 4th, as well as a Pechakucha (lightning event) in Mid-July. Slides from Ms. Gilbert’s presentation are available. Youth Sustainability Summit April 18, 2020 has been chosen as the date for the event. Maddy Garbacz reported that the committees are working on the agenda and activities for the big event. Annual Metrics Scott Tess shared additional metrics and a draft of the Annual Report that has been collected for the City’s energy, water and waste performance. Geothermal Alliance of Illinois John Freitag, Executive Director from the Geothermal Alliance of Illinois gave a presentation on geothermal heat pumps and energy, providing a bit of history on geothermal power, how sustainability it is and the possibility of becoming net zero homes through geothermal power. The next Sustainability Advisory Commission meeting is scheduled for May 5, 2020. This meeting was recorded. 1
