The Urbana Free Library Board of Trustees Minutes of a Special Meeting Held on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 Present: Scott Bennett, Bill Brown, Mary Ellen Farrell, Anh Ha Ho, Anna Merritt, Mark Netter, Beth Scheid, Chris Scherer, and Jane Williams Also present: Many people from the public The Urbana Free Library Board of Trustees met in the Lewis Auditorium of The Urbana Free Library on June 19, 2013. The special meeting was called to order with opening remarks by the president, Mary Ellen Farrell, at 7:00 p.m. PETITIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS Public comment The following people spoke during public comment: Karen Winter-Nelson Mary Manley Tom Moone Elaine Hershbarger Laura Haber Barbara Meyer Al Kagan JP Goguen Austin McCann Eric Jakobsson Jacqueline Hannah Ed Weiskamp Kate McDowell Jackie Terry Lora Fegley Carol Tilley Elaine Bearden Kathryn La Barre Cathy Eastman Don Thorsen Case Sprenkle Kirsten Ruby Mary Ann Alexander Ilona Matkovszki Rachel Vellenga Carolyn Casady Trimble Danielle Chynoweth Maggie Taylor Laurence Smith Stuart Levy John Marlin Sam Payne Desiree Yomtoob Anne Phillips Jodi Murphy Dennis Roberts Shirley Stillinger Mike Weissman Elizabeth Nicol CLOSED SESSION At 8:55 p.m., the Board went into closed session by roll call vote for the purpose of discussing personnel matters. Board of Trustees of The Urbana Free Library – Minutes for the special meeting of June 19, 2013 – Page 2 ADJOURNMENT The Board moved back into open session at 11:25 p.m., issued the following statements that were released to the media the next morning, and immediately adjourned. The following statements were issued by the Board: 1. “We are encouraged that people are involved and share our love and concern for Urbana Free Library. We’ve heard you, and the Board is in the process of addressing the issues you have raised over the last week. To protect the privacy of individuals, please respect our process and understand that we are taking steps. As we make progress, we will keep you informed.” 2. The Board directs that all weeding activities and shipping of materials off library premises cease immediately. 3. Urbana Free Library will reopen the strategic planning process, complete a draft strategic plan, and make that plan available to the community for a reasonable period of time for their review and comment. 4. The Board directs the Executive Director to explore the feasibility of televising future Board meetings.
