CITY OF VERONA MINUTES POLICE AND FIRE COMMISSION December 21, 2013 VERONA CITY HALL 1. The meeting was called to order by Delora Newton at 8:01 a.m. 2. Roll Call: Delora Newton, Richard Jensen, Joleen Semmann, Paul Curtis. Also Present: Joe Giver, Fire Chief; Steve Zach, Attorney, Boardman & Clark. 3. Deferred Approval of Minutes of the November 7, 2013 Police and Fire Commission Meeting. 4. Closed Session: Motion by Newton, second by Jensen, to go into closed session at 8:02 a.m. for purpose of reviewing candidates for certification for part-time positions with City of Verona Fire Department and to meet and confer with legal counsel relating to the issuance of the temporary injunction by Dane County Circuit Court Judge Anderson staying the hiring of full time fire department personnel pending resolution of the lawsuit filed by the union. Motion carried 4-0. 5. Open Session: Motion to go into open session at 8:48 a.m. Motion by Newton, second by Semmann. Motion carried 4-0. 6. Motion to certify the Paid-On-Call Candidates and the Paid-On-Premise Candidates from the eligibility list prepared by Chief Giver. Motion by Semmann, second by Jensen. Motion carried 4-0. 7. Motion to authorize Chief Giver to extend offers of employment to the Paid-On-Call candidates and the Paid-On-Premise candidates. Motion by Newton, second by Semmann. Motion carried 4-0. 8. Motion to adjourn at 8:52 a.m. Motion by Newton, second by Semmann. Motion carried 4-0. 9. Adjournment.

Consideration of moving into closed session pursuant to sec. 19.85(1)(c), Stats., for the purpose of reviewing candidates for certification for part-time positions with the City of Verona Fire Department and pursuant to sec. 19.85(1)(c), (e), and (g) for the purpose of considering employment issues over which the Commission has jurisdiction, conducting business in which competitive or bargaining reasons require a closed session and conferring with legal counsel about litigation strategy all related to the fire department hiring process and current litigation 5.
