CITY OF VERONA
SENIOR CITIZENS COUNCIL COMMITTEE
September 10, 2013 5:30 p.m.
Verona City Center
108 Paoli Street Verona WI 53593
1. The meeting was called to order by Chair Stiner at 5:30 p.m.
2. Roll call: Present: Diaz, McGilvray, Stiner
Also Present: Dale Hagen, Seniors Representative;
Diane Lanaville, Director of Senior Services
3. Minutes of July 9, 2013, were approved as submitted on motion by Stiner,
second by McGilvray. 3/0
4. Director expressed appreciation to Senior Center staff for how well the Senior
Center was managed during her recent medical leave. She is still ‘playing catch
up’ but things are going well. ** She emphasized the importance of replacing
dining area chairs yet this fall for safety, comfort and aesthetics. The reserve fund
created with Center rental money will cover the majority of the cost. The chairs
are the first piece of a 5 yr upkeep/repurposing plan that includes changing the
Board Room to a small game room, making the Fireplace Lounge a presentation
room, replacing flooring and doing other projects, culminating with the
remodeling of the reception/office area. Currently space is completely maxed out
and along with parking limitation, constraining adding or expanding programs.
The 5 yr plan will allow for some growth. ** The 2014 budget request includes
the flooring replacement and addition of one ½ time staff position. This is the
first staff addition requested in almost 7 yrs. and an absolute necessity to deal
with the growth of programs and activities. The remainder of the budget includes
very modest increases. After a Committee conversation about transportation
issues, a transportation subsidy will be included at the suggestion of McGilvray
who expressed serious concern about elders who are not able to participate in
programs and activities due to lack of available transportation.
5. Participation numbers remained relatively constant through the summer, a time
when there is traditionally a dip due to increased family activities, vacations, etc.
The Case Manager has stayed very busy both with seniors and family care
providers. Exercise programs definitely lead the growth for all programs.
6. Senior Representative Dale Hagen discussed recent VAAA projects and
programs. ** The money invested in a sound board and equipment for the
Classic Country Music has been almost completely recovered through donations
and a 50/50 Raffle done on Mondays to support that activity. ** The Pie Social
was very successful, as was the Strawberry Cart at Hometown Days
** Planning will begin shortly for the Community Tree Lighting Chili Supper
done in late November with the Chamber of Commerce and the Fire Department.
** The website is up and being maintained by volunteers to reflect the most
current activities and programs at the Center.
7. The current Expense Report was reviewed with no concerns raised at this time.
8. Meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m. on motion by Stiner, second by Diaz. 3/0
