Meeting Minutes Dec. 9, 2014
Call to Order: Meeting called to order by Brad Stiner 6:03 PM.
Present: Stiner, Diaz, Hanson, McGilvray. Excused: Hagen
Minutes: Motion to approve Oct. 2014 minutes made by Diaz, approved by
McGilvray. (There was no meeting in November.)
Director’s Report (Hanson):
Community Connections
The new City of Verona website goes live on Dec. 18.
Verona Press took photos of Paoli St. Pickers event Monday Dec. 8.
350-400 people attended the Holiday Tree Lighting & Chili Supper Dec. 5.
(Fire Dept., Chamber of Commerce, High School, & Senior Center.)
We held a fundraiser for the Verona Area Needs Network Food Pantry the
week before Thanksgiving. We raised $652 and donated 300# of food.
Chamber of Commerce events: Young Professionals Group: Jennifer;
School & Business Event, Mary; Holiday Mixer, both Mary & Jennifer
Mary attended a presentation by UW Engineering students on Dec. 8.
Mary attended the WI Assn. of Senior Centers meeting in November.
Facility:
The heat exchanger failed in the kitchen furnace. It was shut down and repaired
the next day.
We are getting quotes on solutions to the HVAC system issues.
The burner in the fireplace in the Fireside Room has gone bad. The replacement
part is ordered and the repair is scheduled for Jan. 20th.
A pipe broke in the sprinkler system in November, causing the fire alarm to go off.
The Verona Fire Dept. responded, located the problem and shut the water down.
The sprinkler system was patched that day and repaired the next day.
Staff News
We have posted a 30% part time Program Assistant position. This person will be
primarily responsible for the Memory Café program.

November Groups: Caregivers support group, Parkinson’s support group (guest
speaker Josh Neumann, UW Nutrition), Veterans group (Guest: Vet Center),
diabetes support group.
October training/outreach meetings: TRIAD meeting, TRIAD Car fit/Car check.
Medicare Part D open enrollment - assisting people with Med D options.
November training/outreach meetings: TRIAD meeting, Medicare Part D open
enrollment assistance
October/November - weekly outreach meetings at area senior apartments: Sugar
Creek, Prairie Oaks II & Evia, to reach home-bound residents.

The core strengthening class has become very popular. We will have a full page
promoting all our classes in the next City Rec brochure.
Holiday events include the Dec. 15 Paoli St. Pickers Holiday Party, Dec. 16 City
Employees Party, Dec. 22 Retro Swing Ban, Dec. 29 Bingo Party, and the
Dec. 31 New Year’s Eve Party.
Financial Update
The proposed 2015 budget was approved as written, with a 6.37% increase over
2014. As of Nov. 30, 2014, we are 334 days, or 92% through this year’s budget.
To date, we have spent 68% of our annual budget.
VAAA Report
The annual planning meeting was held at Capitol Bank on Dec. 3. An overview of
2015 Programs was presented by Jennifer Miller, Program Manager. (A copy of
this was provided to the Commission members.)
The officers for the VAAA were all re-elected for the positions they currently hold:
Dale Hagen, President; Leon McGregor, Vice President; Jim Sweet, Treasurer; and
Doug Wolfe, Secretary.
The VAAA approved the use of the Memorial Fund for the purchase of 5 tables for
the Fireside Room ($2100), and a buffet for the dining room ($2000).
Adjournment
A motion to adjourn was made by Stiner, seconded by McGilvray. The meeting
was adjourned at 6:57 PM.
