CITY OF VERONA SENIOR SERVICES COMMITTEE September 14, 2021 VERONA SENIOR CENTER MINUTES 1. The meeting of the Senior Services Committee was called to order by Christine Posey at 6:03pm. 2. Roll Call: On roll call: Christine Posey and Phil Hoechst were present. Also present: Stephanie Ehle, Senior Center Director. 3. Approval of the minutes from the August 10, 2021 meeting. 4. Director’s Report • The Senior Center will be moving forward with their merger with the Town of Verona. The Case Management teams has been in contact with their Case Manager/Director. A note will be sent from both parties to all those currently receiving services. The Senior Center will also have a booth at the Town of Verona information fair coming up on September 25th. In addition, a letter will be sent with a Town of Verona newsletter informing people who aren’t currently receiving services of the upcoming changes. • RSVP will be requiring vaccinations for passengers. More to come on this and how it will affect riders and drivers. RSVP will be handling all the paperwork required to get proof of vaccinations. • September started the rental contract with Hometown Church. The Senior Center is pleased so far. • The pig roast on August 27th was a huge success. Staff served over 200 people. • The Senior Center continues the search for reusable MOW containers. They have received some product information from another Senior Center who uses reusable containers. They hope to make a change by January 2022. • The Verona Senior Center will be partnering with Oakmont and the Ice Age Trail Alliance for a fall color walk. This will follow an educational program given by the Alliance at the Verona Library. The walk will take place on October 13 at 9am. • Verona Dementia Friendly Committee has formed a walking team for the Alzheimer’s Awareness walk in October. The Verona Memory Champions will walk Sunday, October 03, 2021. Clickable link: 2021 Walk to End Alzheimer's - Madison, WI: Verona Memory Champions | Walk to End Alzheimer's Registration starts at 8:30am. and the walk starts at 10:15am at Madison Memorial High School. • The Senior Center is continuing to collect writing instruments for recycling. The Library is collecting masks for recycling through the same program and the Senior Center will have a box to collect those as well. 5. Reports on Programs and Case Management: Programs – • The staff will continue with both virtual and in-house events. • New in September: blood pressure clinic with Verona Fire Department, and they will be bringing back “Let’s Discuss”. • October will bring the following programs: Drug Take Back, Car Check, Halloween Magic Show, Vendor Fair and Flu Clinic with Walgreens. • Looking ahead the Senior Center will offer a Veteran’s Day program in November and Chili Supper in December. • The Senior Center will be updating the format of the chronicle in 2022. • They will also be getting an updated AV system in the main room. • The programs department is also actively working to recruit more volunteers. The focus has been on recruiting Meals on Wheels drives and RSVP drivers for medical appointments. Case Management – • The team is staying very busy. In addition to regular case management duties they are getting ready to absorb the Town of Verona. • The team continues to explore the Outreach program. Case Managers will be offering an outreach opportunity at the library this month. Future plans will be based on the pandemic. • Veteran’s group meetings will resume in August on the second Thursdays of each month at 2pm. Drake will be main contact for the group. In addition to the group meeting, once a month a veteran’s movie will be shown. The first movie is 1917. • Caregiver’s group will meet in person for August and going forward (as allowed by pandemic). The Case Managers will incorporate those who can’t attend via zoom and work with them 1:1. • Triad - Coffee with a Cop is scheduled for September 17th. Deputy Zach Barton from the Dane County Sherriff’s Department is the new community deputy. Zach will be attending Coffee with a Cop and Triad future events • Drug Take-Back and Car check are scheduled for October. Due to the pandemic Car Fit will not be offered this year. Online opportunities will be available. • Loan Closet – The team have recruited two volunteers to help manage the program. There will be new procedures to reduce unneeded or damaged donations. They hope to start taking donations again in September. • Needs – Case Managers continue to see more individuals and/or their families reaching out for help, specifically around home-delivered meals and other help in the home.
