The following members were present: Linda van Doorn, Michael Cheselka and Patty Hanley. Paul Layer was absent. Andrea West, Planner, Kelly O’Brien Principle Planner, and Sharmaine Abaied, Board Clerk, were present. Mr. Baldwin opened the meeting reading the Board of Architectural Reviews Resolution for Continuity of Government; he then proceeded with a second by Ms. van Doorn. 2 Roll Call Ms. Abaied called roll with Linda van Doorn, Roy Baldwin, Michael Cheselka, and Patty Hanley being present. Paul Layer being absent 3 Approval of Minutes Mr. Baldwin asked for any comments or additions to the minutes for the June 2020 minutes. There were none, Mr. Baldwin stated they would then be accepted. 4 New Business 405 Maple Ave E - Aditi Gourmet - Sign Request for approval of a new sign for Aditi Gourmet (formerly Kochin Kitchen) located at 405 Maple Avenue E, Docket No. PF-31-20-BAR, in the C-2 General Commercial district; filed by Suku Nair, business owner. Mr. Suku Nair was present to represent the application. Mr. Cheselka and Mr. Baldwin felt that the duplication of Aditi and Gourmet (in the logo) in the lower corner was redundant. Mr. Baldwin preferred the lettering font of “Aditi” in the logo to the font of Aditi in the sign. There was continued discussion regarding the font of the sign. Mr. Nair stated he could remove “gourmet” and “est. 1989” from the logo. Mr. Cheselka made a motion that the request for approval of a new sign for Aditi Gourmet Town of Vienna Page 1 Printed on 9/11/2020 Board of Architectural Review Meeting Minutes July 16, 2020 (formerly Kochin Kitchen) located at 405 Maple Avenue E, Docket No. PF-31-20-BAR, be approved with the condition that Aditi logo font be enlarged and the “gourmet’ and “est. 1989” be removed. Ms. Hanley seconded the motion. Ms. Hanley asked to amend the motion stating to resize the Aditi in script off the type written centering on the sign, eliminate the “est. 1989” and “gourment”. The sign would then read: Aditi in script, Aditi Gourmet in capital letter, and to the right “Indian Flavors”. Mr. Cheselka accepted the friendly amendment. Ayes: Ms. van Doorn, Mr. Cheselka, Ms. Hanley, and Mr. Baldwin Motion: Cheselka Second: Hanley Absent: Layer Approved: 4-0 344 Maple Ave E - Amma Vegetarian Kitchen - Sign Request for approval of a new sign for Amma Vegetarian Kitchen located at 344 Maple Avenue E, Docket No. PF-32-20-BAR, in the C-2 General Commercial district; filed by Suku Nair, business owner. Mr. Suku Nair was present to represent the application. Mr. Baldwin stated it appeared he wanted to change the sign color from orange to green. Mr. Hanley made a motion that the request for approval of a new sign for Amma Vegetarian Kitchen located at 344 Maple Avenue E, Docket No. PF-32-20-BAR, be approved. Ms. van Doorn seconded the motion Ayes: Ms. van Doorn, Mr. Cheselka, Ms. Hanley, and Mr. Baldwin Motion: Hanley Second: van Doorn Absent: Layer Approved: 4-0 465 Maple Ave W - Wawa - Exterior Modification - Revision Request for approval of revised exterior modifications for Wawa located at 465 Maple Avenue W, Docket No. PF-09-19-BAR, in the C-1 Local Commercial district; filed by Robert Brant, of Walsh Colucci Lubeley & Walsh, representative of Wawa, Inc. Bob Brandt from Walsh Colucci Lubeley was present to represent the application. Jed Bell, Wawa representative, and Liz Lawrence, project architect, were also present for questions. Mr. Brandt went over some of the background regarding the original approval by the Board in February 2019 and then some revisions which were approved in April 2019. He also discussed the site plan and building permit submission and review. Upon inspection of the completed construction it was discovered there were some deviations from the approval which was the reason for going before the Board. The modifications are as follows: - The railing that wraps Maple Ave and Nutley St with glass panels, but Wawa Town of Vienna Page 2 Printed on 9/11/2020 Board of Architectural Review Meeting Minutes July 16, 2020 substituted with a black 2” aluminum fence based on maintenance purposes. The glass would be difficult to maintain and keep clean. - The pilasters along the fence are no longer covered with the wood appearance paneling. It was changed to a thin brick veneer, consistent in color and treatment with the façade of the building. - The color of the EFIS paneling behind the main entrance sign. Wawa determined it would be wiser to go with the darker gray color to match the building and for maintenance purposes. - The soffit is white but was approved for a darker color. Wawa is in the process of obtaining the correct colors to match the black color that was shown in the original approval. The new soffit was to arrive for installation within 4-5 weeks. - The number of trees remained unchanged or is possible greater than the approved trees. During construction Wawa substituted five trees. Three Crape Myrtle trees were substituted out for White Fringe trees. Two Yellow Woods were substituted with Tulip trees. The Town Arborist has reviewed and approved the tree changes. There was some discussion by the Board regarding the changes citing that they all were amenable to the changes. Mr. Baldwin did discuss the Tulip Poplars with Mr. Bell stating he was not favorable of the Tulip Poplars. There was continued discussion regarding the Tulip Poplars Mr. Cheselka made a motion that the request for approval of revised exterior modifications for Wawa located at 465 Maple Avenue W, Docket No. PF-09-19-BAR be approved.
