Reading Program Progress Check Adjournment Next meeting is Thursday, October 5 in the City Commission conference room at Walker City Hall Page 1 of 5  COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES COMMISSION CONFERENCE ROOM THURSDAY, AUGUST 3, 2023 5:30 PM Call Meeting to Order - Record Attendance Committee members: Discussion Items Approval of Previous Minutes: Didn't have enough people for a quorum Business Updates • Nick Erickson gave an update on the Walker Chamber of Commerce Walker After Work networking events. • Make sure reminder emails and texts work to let members know about upcoming networking events. • Jena Wilmers said Chick Fil A will host a Veterans Day event for the American Legion Post 1111. • Walker Chamber reaching out to Kenowa Hills Public Schools for a possible career fair for high schoolers and others in the community. • Start planning for an end-of-summer backpack reading program. Reach out to local businesses and corporations for interest in participating • Neighborhood Updates It's been a few years, but CEC is part of the Adopt-a-Road program. Cleanups happen 4 times a year. We will work on making this a priority next year. • Plan to revive the Mayor's Summer Reading Program (May) Looking at books for grades 3-6 Looking at the surrounding elementary schools: Alpine, Central, Zinser, WMESA, Walker Charter Community Engagement Committee Minutes 8-3-23 Page 1 2 of 2 5  Get KDL Walker Branch on board Possible school supplies drive for teachers (summer timeframe) • Start collecting items after winter break (around Feb 19) • Possible drive-thru book drive thru • Discussed idea of cookout for 3 neighborhoods Other Business Create a calendar of City events to begin planning for 2024. We will be adding three new members to the Community Engagement Committee after the Parks and Recreation Committee completed it's task and will dissolve.
