Quorum was established. Roll Call Commissioners present: Allison Robbins, Steve Carter, Cindy Bechtol, Sarah Chamberlin, Sue Kraus, Maya Kucij (on Zoom). Ex-Officio members present: Marcy Barnhart, Eddie Osborne. Approval of Agenda Sue motioned to approve, and Sarah seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Approval of Minutes Sarah motioned to approve, and Cindy seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Introduction of Guests/Visitors New Warrensburg residents Liz and Roger Coleman attended the meeting and introduced themselves. Community Theater Status and Structure Allison shared information from Doug Harris regarding the Commission’s authority to dissolve the Warrensburg Community Theater (WCT) committee. He noted that “Section 2-415 of the ordinances put this power with the commission” and that if WCT forms a separate group, “there would have to be contractual agreements in place before public monies held by the commission could be transferred to a new, private group.” Sue motioned to motioned to dissolve the Warrensburg Community Theater subcommittee, first established in 2010. Sarah seconded. Allison asked for a roll call vote. ● Cindy Bechtol - Abstain (due to conflict of interest) ● Sarah Chamberlin - Yes ● Sue Krause - Yes ● Steve Carter - Yes ● Maya Kucij - Yes ● Allison Robbins - Yes Motion passed unanimously and the Warrensburg Community Theater subcommittee was dissolved. Commissioners agreed that this would not impact Cindy Bechtol’s position on the commission and she would remain serving her commissioner position. Cindy gave a brief update on what the future of the WCT might look like, noting that a meeting was scheduled for those involved with the theater group. New Business At the January meeting, the commission will discuss commission positions and plan for the 2024 calendar year and possible WAC events. I am planning a guest artist concert and residency by arx duo, a world-renowned percussion duo, to serve the Warrensburg, UCM, and broader Missouri communities. $U[GXR¶VPLVVLRQLVWRH[SDQG³«WKHSHUFXVVLRQFKDPEHU PXVLFUHSHUWRLUHWKURXJKWKHFUHDWLRQDQGSUHVHQWDWLRQRIQHZZRUNV´ DU[GXRZHEVLWH ,QWKH\SUHPLHUHG ³+DUPRQLF&DQRQ´E\'RPLQLF0XUFRWWWKH%ULWLVK&RPSRVHURIWKH<HDU; for this concert they performed in the Royal Albert Hall, a famous venue in London. Also, arx duo has worked with composers such as Jonathan Bailey Holland, Ted Hearne, Steven Mackey, and Juri Seo; they have performed with the Dover String Quartet, Aeolus String Quartet, Bergamot String Quartet, Amy Yang, Henry Kramer, and The Percussion Collective. I first heard arx duo perform in 2013, and to this day I consider their performances to be the most polished and inspiring within the Western classical music culture that I can think of. Their performances are engaging and often use instruments from a variety of cultural backgrounds. For example, ³6HHGV´E\/HRQDUGR*RURVLWRDQG5DIDHO$OEHUWRZDV written in collaboration with arx duo. It is exclusively for shaker instruments that use Brazilian shaker performance techniques. Their performances are often unconventional, such as their collaboration with Alyssa Weinberg called ³7DEOH7DON´ for prepared vibraphone; in other words, they take a conventional Western classical percussion instrument, the vibraphone, and they do all kinds of fun things to it to create interesting sounds. They also perform virtuosic repertoire from Western classical iconic composers, such as their arrangement of ³7DQJR´E\,JRU6WUDYLQVN\. Arx duo will be in Warrensburg from April 11-12. During this time, I am planning a concert at a local venue in town that will be open to the public on April 11, hopefully as part of the ³&RQFHUWVLQWKH&RXUWKRXVH´ series. I am planning interactive classes for Warrensburg High School, Crest Ridge High School, and UCM students. And, they will headline the Missouri Day of Percussion on April 13 at Battle High School in Columbia, MO, an event that served over 400 middle school, high school, and college students and teachers from across the state last year. I will write more about these events in the sections below. In terms of a target market, I am hoping that we will engage a diverse collection of people due to the high school classes, the public performance in a space outside of UCM Hart Recital Hall, and with the Day of Percussion, which is a massive event I help organize. Funding: Provide total event budget (Can be attached by separate sheet). Please include In-kind. How will WAC funds be used? Arx duo has requested a $2500 honorarium for this project. Any WAC funds granted will be used for this purpose. The purpose of the WAC Community Arts Grant Program is to increase public awareness of :DUUHQVEXUJ¶VDUWVUHVRXUFHVE\VXSSRUWLQJSURJUDPVWKDWVHUYHWKHcultural interests of a diverse Warrensburg community. How will this project impact Warrensburg? This project will impact Warrensburg in the following ways: a public concert at a public venue, interactive classes for area high school students, and classes for students at UCM. $U[GXR¶VSDUWLFLSDWLRQLQWKH'D\RI3HUFXVVLRQZLWKWKH :DUUHQVEXUJ$UWV&RPPLVVLRQ¶VVXSSRUWZLOOEHDUHVSHFWDEOHDQGJHQHURXVJHVWXUHQRWLFHGE\SDUWLFLSDQWVIURP around the state. ,KDYHVSRNHQZLWK(GGLH2VERUQHDERXWKRVWLQJDU[GXR¶VSHUIRUPDQFHDVSDUWRIKLVConcerts in the Courthouse series; we are currently working out the details. I believe that having the concert in a historic, local venue such as this, would make the event more appealing to potential attendees from the Warrensburg community outside of UCM. It is my hope and intention to have an audience that is comprised of UCM students, area high school students, and the public. If Concerts in the Courthouse does not work out, I am also talking with the Methodist Church in downtown and La Sous de Terre as alternative venue options. I am currently working with Mrs. Sarah Ray at Warrensburg High School and Mr. Christopher Smith at Crest Ridge High School to organize interactive classes with arx duo while they are in town. Back in 2017, I brought arx duo to UCM with a CTL Speaker Series Grant. They did a class that was open to the entire UCM Music student body. Their class involved engaging rhythmic activities that required usage of the entire body; one that stood out to me required participants to dribble basketballs with certain relationships to the other dribblers in the group. They also led a by-rote SHUIRUPDQFHRI6WHYH5HLFK¶V³&ODSSLQJ0XVLF´WKDWZDVVXSHUIXQDQGPHPRUDEOH,UHPHPEHUEHLQJLQFUHGLEO\ impressed with the quality of this performance, and how much the student participants enjoyed it. Arx duo will give two masterclasses to UCM music students. One masterclass will be open to anyone on campus and will be interactive much in the way that their class for the high school students will be. They will also give another class to UCM Percussion students. As one of the premiere Western classical percussion duos in the world, I would love for my students to get an opportunity to learn from them about more-specialized, percussion topics. Should the Warrensburg Arts Commission decide to support DU[GXR¶VYLVLWLWZLOOEHQRWLFHGDWWKH0LVVRXUL'D\RI Percussion, the largest percussion event held annually in the state. Often people assume that the arts are flourishing in Kansas City, St. Louis, and Columbia, while not as much in more rural communities. I would love to show my statewide percussion community that the arts are alive, well, and supported in Warrensburg. Marketing & Support Material: List your planned marketing efforts for this project. Please provide samples and/or images of publicity materials that will be used, if available. My marketing efforts will include: 1) advertising in UCM Daily for faculty and students, 2) requesting an article about the event from the Muleskinner, 3) requesting an event on the Daily Star Events Calendar, 4) requesting air time to advertise the event on our local radio station, 4) advertising on UCM Music social media pages, 5) advertising in the Missouri Percussive Arts Society Facebook group, 5) printed concert announcements that will be posted around the UCM campus, Warrensburg HS, Crest Ridge HS, and around Warrensburg (sample attached from a previous event(). All printed materials will include the WAC logo.
