Wilson Building 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW · Washington, DC 20004 Council Chairman Phil Mendelson announces a public hearing before the Committee of the Whole on Bill 23-233, the·"Diverse Washingtonians Commemorative Works Amendment Act of2019" and Bill 23-234, the "Advisory Commission on Monuments, Markers, and Symbols Establishment Act of2019." The hearing will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020 in Room 120 of the John A. Wilson Building. · The stated purpose of Bill 23-233 is to amend the Street and Alley Closing arid Acquisition Procedures Act of 1982 to include the Council as among those that may sponsor a commemorative work on public space, and to require the Commemorative Works Committee to commission specified works that honor persons who have made significant contributions to American culture or history, to have at least one such commemorative work erected in· each Ward by a date certain, and to develop a written·plan to achieve the purposes of this act, and to require the Mayor to submit the plan to the Council for its approval. The stated purpose of Bill 23-234 is to establish an advisory commission to study monuments: markers, and symbols throughout the District to assess their cultural and historical appropriateness. Those who wish to testify are. asked to email the. Witnesses ~ho anticipate needing spoken language interpretation, or require sign language interpretation, are requested to inform the Committee qffice of the need as soon as possible but no later than five business days before the proceeding. We will make every effort to fulfill timely requests, however requests received in less than five business days may ·not be fulfilled and altemat.ives may be offered. Persons wishing to testify are encquraged, but not required, to submit 15 cop,ies of written testimony. If submitted by the close of business on January 14, 2020 the testimony will be distributed to Councilmembers before.the hearing. Witnesses should limit their testimony to four minutes; less timewill be allowed if there are a large number of witnesses.
