Bill 2~-302, Little Brown Bat Official State Mammal Designation Act of2019

Council Chairman Phil Mendelson announces a public hearing before the Committee of the
Whole on Bill 23-317, the "Little Brown Bat Official State Mammal Designation Act of2019." The
hearing will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, January 27, 2020 in Room 120 of the John A. Wilson
Building. ·
The stated purpose ofBill 23-317 is to designate the Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) as the
official state mammal of the District of Columbia. This proposed designation was recommended· by
the Girl Scouts of th~ Capitol Hill Cluster School, trqops 44046, 44047, and 44051, wh~ studied Little
Brown Bats and proposed that the Council adopt the bats as the official state mammal of the District
of Columbia.
Those ·who wish to testify are asked to email the Committee of the Whole at
cow@dccounciLus, or call Evan Cash at (202) 724 .. 7002, and to provide your name, address, telephone
number, organizational affiliation and title (if any) by close of business Thursday, January 23,
2020. Witnesses who anticipate needing spoken language interpretation, or require sign language
interpretation, are requested to infolJll the Committee office of the need as soon as possible but no later
than five business days before the proceeding. We will make ·every effort to fulfill timely requests,
however requests received in less than five business days may not be fulfilled and alternatives may be
offered.
Persons wishing to testify are encouraged, but not required, to submit 15 copies of written
testimony. If submitted by the close of business on January 23, 2020 the testimony will be distributed
to Councilmembers before the hearing. Witnesses should limit their testimony to three minutes unless
longer time is arranged with the Committee in advance of the hearing. Copies of the legislation can
be obtained through the Legislative Services Division of the Secretary of the Council's office or on
http://lims.dccouncil.us. Hearing materials, including a draft witness list, can be accessed at
http://www.chairmanmen.delson.com/circulation, 24 hours -in advance of the hearing.
If you are unable to testify at the hearing, written statements are encouraged and will be made
a part of the official record. · Written statements should be submitted to the Committee of the Whole, ·
